this is way Japanese learn to use IDNs

Found this message on a yahoo blog. It isn't any more than a single blog entry from one guy to fellow rugby fans but when you think about it, this is actually significant for us. 1. It is validation of the IDN value proposition 2. It demonstrates how knowledge and usage of IDNs will spread (is starting to spread) by word of mouth in Japan. The big brands are only a few months away.

"日本語ドメインを取得しました。アドレスバーに【鳴門ラグビー.net】と直接入力して頂ければページが表示されます。このブログを見ていただいて気に入って下さった方、お知り合いの方にご周知よろしくお願いします。"

"I registered a Japanese Domain Name. Just directly input into the address bar 鳴門ラグビー.net and the page will come up. For those people who would be interested in seeing this blog, please tell others you know."

It will be like lighting a powder keg.

Dude. Not that weird. It's just a school league rugby team. It isn't an investment opportunity.

Yes, it is the fact that these guys clearly know nothing of domaining that makes it signficant. These are ordinary Japanese doing what comes naturally. At this stage, one registration of this kind is more significant than 100 speculators!

well we want them to buy the .com cause thats where our money is . If they buy the .net perhaps they'd buy .biz, .info etc

Maybe we are all wrong and .net is the big winner! That wouldn't be so bad for me but it would be a surprise. But seriously it is hard to tell - he may have done it because he saw an ad for .net or it may have been a pricing decision or he may have assumed that the .jp / .com was taken. It's impossible to say.

Well, he's right so long as the browser is IE7 or Firefox. If it is IE6 ... ERROR. Shall we presume he doesn't know IE6 users won't be able to type the name in?

Really genius, why not? A blogger is totally an end user in my opinion.

Re: this is way Japanese learn to use IDNs

I think unlike the other contenders Dot Net has already been fairly heavily hammered. It is unlikely that many dot Biz will be registered where the dot net is still available.

Agree with that, but pretty sure there are a bunch of nice .nets for the taking.
