China To Start "Million IDN Sites" Plan
Anyone care to translate? Thanks. Perhaps my analysis has finally persuaded China to start working on IDN.Ascii and forget about IDN.IDN for now. Congrats!

Re: China To Start "Million IDN Sites" Plan
If I got it right (used babelfish translator), CNNIC will be going on tour in May around the country giving demos about how the new browsers support IDNs and they will be promoting the registration of IDN.cn sites, doing on-the-spot domain registrations. Also, it seems as if they will use "网民" as the mapping for the .cn extension.

Thrust to Chinese domain names
By Chen Jialu (China Daily) Updated: 2007-04-11 09:30 China yesterday launched a platform with the goal of notching up 1 million Chinese-character domain names, a move marking a new era for Chinese Web surfers to trek the information highway in their native language. Microsoft announced late last year that its new Internet Explorer 7 browser and Vista individual operating system could support Chinese domain names, a crucial technological breakthrough that allows the application, paving the way for the new thrust by the Chinese domain name registrar. Announcing the initiative, the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) called it its final effort to break the language barrier on the English-dominated Internet. "Chinese domain names are a must for domestic Internet development and are also an urgent need of Chinese Net users," said Mao Wei, the head of CNNIC. He predicted that within two years most Chinese will surf the Internet in Chinese language. http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/bizchin...ent_847894.htm |

I would think there are already well over a Million Chinese Character names in circulation already. Even CNNIC alone must now be getting fairly close to that mark.

The main gist of what I wanted to say via "it's already mapped" is that it already has a designated IDN extension: . It will not change to . |

Re: China To Start "Million IDN Sites" Plan
CNNIC Urges Websites To Use CN Domain Name
April 13, 2007 With the support of China's Ministry of Information Industry, the Information Office of the State Council, the State Commission Office for Public Sector Reform and China Academy of Sciences, the China Internet Network Information Center has formally launched a "One Million Websites Using Chinese Domain Names" program. CNNIC survey results show that 15% of the Chinese Internet users can write down about 10 commonly used English domain names when surfing online; over 90% of internet users believe it is easier and more convenient to remember and use Chinese domain names for online surfing; and about 53% of Chinese netizens believe that giving priority to developing Internet services within a native language environment will help promote the development of the country's Internet business. CNNIC says that in 2007, all the mainstream browsers based on Internet Explorer, Netscape, Opera and Firefox will support Chinese-language domain names. They will also hold touring lectures to popularize Internet use of .CN domain names. Chinese officials have often said that China's Internet security is best maintained by the use of .CN domain names because China has more direct control over those top-level domain name servers and registrars, while China has very little control over .COM or other TLD services. http://www.chinatechnews.com/2007/04...n-domain-name/ |
