As far as I understand, Verisign is behind ICANN's decisions most of the time, so it looks like ICANN is showing the public they are open to several approaches and will be testing both. However, the DNAME solution is the preferred way of doing things. They just can't announce it RIGHT NOW. It is all PR/PC stuff at this point.
In a very remote case that DNAME will not happen (and I stress the word "remote"), we will still make out like bandits. DNAME is great to have, but not a must to have.
