Question What's the difference between...

Hi,

What is the difference between コンピュータ and コンピューター please ?

According to online translation, it's "computer" in japanese for both.

All what i consulted show me no difference, but i feel there's one...

コンピューター is plural, and japanese don't use plural very often.

Can anyone explain the difference between カレンダー and カレンダ (calendar)? Is the primary term カレンダー plural?

i've studied long and hard and i think the difference is one has a thing on the end.

the with thing get a 300k ovt, the one without gets jack.

I have the with thing in net - and if my memory serves me correct i was bidding against olney - so i say the thing gets it.

The difference is that one sounds like "konpyuutaa" and the others sounds like "konpyuuta". The difference is that one group of people, the majority, think that "computer" transliterated into Japanese sounds like "konpyuuta" while another group of people, the minority, thinks that it sounds like "konpyuutaa".

That is all it is. There is no semantic difference between the two words. Which is more valuable: honor.com or honour.com ? Same thing but in Japanese.

Repeat. One is NOT a plural. Unlike English or Indo-european languages we don't use plurals in our language often. Sometimes we say "anata" "you" and "anata-tachi" "you" (plural). But usage of plurals is very conservative in Japanese, we infer whether a subject or object is a plural by context not by grammar.

NP. I have learned so much about so many other languages on this forum as an indirect side-effect of the whole IDN thing, happy to share what little I know.

Actually check OVT again. The "with thing" gets 229K and probably 20% of those are actually folks typing the "without thing". Overture consolidates the two variants into a single number I believe.
