Certainly a big ticket sale of an Asian ccTLD.

What does it tell us? Well, that is open to a lot of different interpretations.

It might suggest that the Asian Market is starting to be taken seriously by serious investors.

It might suggest that dot IN has more market potential than .co.in.

It certainly shows that some at least believe that English language domains have a huge potential in dot IN.

What is apparent is that the lack of availability of serious quality in dot com, means there is more room these days in the top chart for alternative extension. No, dot WS is not likely to get their anytime soon, and even dot biz with a meagre $3801 for CarInsurance is not likely to dominate the leader board anytime soon. Other extension though are starting to have an impact, and Sedo seems to be ready to weigh in with a Six Figure dot Org (freecreditscore.org $123,000). Nah, got to be a misprint surely?

i thought i was beginning to understand the domain industry, but when i see things like: Moniker added a second entry with #12 MySuperSweet16.com at $15,250

i just scratch my head

I don't know, you could almost hazard a guess at who might be involved there!

Not quite sure what is going on there. Viacom is the current registrant, and the domain was last updated on the 11 April which is a while ago now!

ah ok, yes - you forget sometimes when you see these sales, that often its the website and associated business where the value lies, as apposed to purely the domain name.

Yes, and in others the existing turnover and profitability of things that go down as business sales cannot be justified until you take the domain into account.

Ebay bought Rent.com for $400M I believe, but the numbers for the actually business did seem to justify much more than a 10th of that value. I am still convinced that was the biggest domain sale ever.

"Worth has to be set over numerous criteria.

Extension is still important but of a reducing bonus value. The cheaper the product/service the less value for the extension. Why? The more affordable the item the more widespread the usage and therefore less restrictive to the .com TLD. Extensions such as .ws .tv .to have great value worldwide in specific areas of domain names. If you can get it to work with the extension it is extremely valuable such as domain.ws (as in website or worldsite) for generic and web words - free.tv for programs that appear on TV or words associated with the industry - and voucher.to for going places etc. They are short and discriptive.

Think of voucher to as having a brand name after it www.voucher.to/subway.html or as a sub domain such as food.voucher.to making it extremely valuable for it's double usage and easy description that sticks in the mind.

Some words will get 50,000,000 results but if you are one of the crowd then it is valueless. Having a popular domain just by name is part of the requirement - content will still drive most of the results in which case extension becomes of much less value.

However you must remember country specific extensions such as .uk .au .nz .cn .pk have regional significance and while near valueless within one region are extremely valuable locally.

Names that work with good industry/term extensions such as .tv .ws .to .in have great marketing value.

Examples such as

color.tv
widescreen.tv
lcd.tv

waterwise.ws
health.ws

going.to
coupon.to

going.in
travelling.in

have huge marketing value worldwide and would have easily twice the value of their .com equivelants if not closer to 5 times"

I have to admit that I have many of these domains. Stuff like scripts.xx templates.xx casino.xx

The crazy extensions do suck but these will get me more than a reg fee for sure.
