Help: 事件 (chinese) is it event as in sporting event?

Found this one yesterday and just trying to understand what it really means.

事件.net (xn--3kqzj.net)

Is it "event" as in sporting event, or "event" as in chain of events? I was just wondering if it might be useful to an online ticketing agency.

Explanations from *native* speakers appreciated.

"事件" is a "event" -

Let's say: Anything happened as a "case" - you may call it (the "case") as a "事件"

Re: Help: 事件 (chinese) is it event as in sporting event?

i'm not a native, but here's my 0.2

in Chinese its use on websites seems to be more related to "incidents"

but it's also Japanese, and scores a good 18k ovt
[event; affair; incident; case; plot; trouble; scandal]

the google trends also show it being a stronger Japanese candidate http://www.google.com/trends?q=%E4%B...B6&ctab=2&sa=N

only a couple of token Japanese bids, so without looking further i'd suggest its not the prime way of saying "event". In fact wiki has it as Incident too

Thanks to both of you. So, it's not really what I thought/hoped it was, but might be a keeper, anyway.

Alpha has become an expert in contextual translation - 事件 has political or news connotations, e.g.

天安门事件 - Tiananmen Incident.

Tiananmen? what happened at Tiananmen?
shouldn't 事件 translate to "myth" then.

Tiananmen is a group gathering that went out of hand, because china doesn't have a singapore public order law that says a public assembly of more than 4 people is illegal.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sources_of_Singapore_law

# The Miscellaneous Offences (Public Order and Nuisance) (Assemblies and Processions) Rules[33] made under the Miscellanous Offences (Public Order and Nuisance) Act[34] require a permit to be taken out for any public assembly or procession of five or more persons in any public place.

Would you say it's a keeper, then, or return for credit?

Re: Help: 事件 (chinese) is it event as in sporting event?

Jackson,

事件 just means - event or incident (very general type term)... can be combined with 10000000 nouns to change the meaning... but is like holding the word "event" in English... would you want to?
It is one of many options which could be provided with sports to get sports event (but means more matter relating to the noun is attached to)... i.e. meaning it has no link to sports at all particularly otherwise.

Personally not sure how useful this would be - unless overt is outstanding!!!
I would never be interested in it myself as an IDN - as too many better choices for general words...

Hint to help you in the future - check your IDNs at http://www.mandarintools.com/worddict.html ... this has a very correct character by character translation for simple words such as this.

Hope comments useful...

Cheers, Asiaplay.

PS: I would remove all references to the above incident - it might cause this forum to become 100% unreachable by any Chinese IDNers based in the middle kingdom - and sure you do not want that to happen... do remember the great wall (this one is high, high on the list of bans)...
