Google, Dell and ISPs all want some .cm style typo revenue

Cox Tests DNS Redirection

Quote:
On the heels of similar efforts by Earthlink and Charter, it looks like Cox is the latest to tinker with a DNS redirection service in their Gulf Coast market, according to Cox engineers in our forums. Usually pitched as something helpful, such services redirect users of mistyped URLs to a splash page (this is what Cox's looks like), with the primary purpose of bringing in extra ad revenue for the ISP. Unfortunately the changes often break useful networking tools.
Google turns the page… in a bad way.

The computer hardware business has razor-thin margins which means making a profit is tough. So the opportunity for Dell to get a recurring revenue stream from an existing customer long after the sale of the computer is more than just enticing, it’s huge.

The screenshot below shows what the Dell-branded Google search results page looks like when you make a typo in your address bar. You can’t even see the search results in the picture (800×600 resolution) because the entire top of the page and right side are plastered with ads.

In some circles, people would call this spyware.
"In some circles," now means everywhere but the halls of the googleplex and Dell Inc.

Do more evil...

I just bought a $850 HP laptop last week, there's no ads like that?

But vista really secrwup my software.

It is a dualcore machine with 1G, but vista runs like an XP on Pentium three with 128RAM!
