A few french geos for appraisal

Encouraged by Nick, I grabbed the few remaining France geo IDNs. Please rate as "return for credit", "keeper", and comments.


Departments:

saône-et-loire.com (xn--sane-et-loire-qlb.com)
haute-saône.com (xn--haute-sane-ybb.com)
côtes-darmor.com (xn--ctes-darmor-2eb.com)



This one below, I added the hyphen because the un-hyphenated version was taken. Is it a keeper, or throw it back?

Regions:

île-de-france.net (xn--le-de-france-4fb.net)


For this one, which one is better:

provence-alpes-côte-dazur.com (xn--provence-alpes-cte-dazur-lnc.com)

Hi jacksonm, I know you probaly want a different opinion than mine on the names but I shall still give my impressions.

saône-et-loire.com -> Def keeper
haute-saône.com -> Def Keeper
île-de-france.net -> Def keeper

Those are ok too but i've made it a personal rule not to reg domains which are written with an apostrophe (')... It just looks pretty weird without it. I guess it's the exception to what i've said about hyphens: if there is an apostrophe on one or more of the words, don't hyphen it.

So personnaly i'd request credit on them because there are just too many ways to type them in and that names without the apostrophe look weird without it.

I'd say neither of them... honestly it's just too long, too many ways of typing them in, has the apostrophe problem... I think you'd have close to 0 type-ins and very little end-user interest

Hi all!

I'm french.

I saw them several weeks ago and I didn't take them (the 3 .com).
Why ?

Mainly because of ô.

A lot of people don't know how make ô with a keyboard; they're not familiar enough. (2 push to have ô, î, ê)
So, no typ-in.
It's not the same with é, è, à (1 push)

Second reason is I don't take at all french regions, cities, etc. (legal issue)

So for me, it's delete4credit. (Only my opinion, maybe wrong)

About hyphens, french like them, more easy to read a combo of 2, 3 words.
But, it's 50/50 IMHO.

if you want to keep some, here the 3 best:

- côte-dazur.com (it's the french riviera, St-Tropez, Marseilles, near Monaco)
- île-de-france.net (region of Paris, more than 10 millions people, 1/5 of France live here)
- côtes-darmor.com (It's In Bretagne, superb land between Ireland and Corse, wonderful, a lot of turism, and I've got family here lol !)

Thanks. That is an interesting point you make about the ô. I could compare it to making the € symbol, a pain in the ass to type "alt-gr e"...

Do you live in France? Would it be illegal for a French citizen to register French geo names, even in .com? I'm assuming no issue for me, since I don't live in France and I'm not a French citizen.

BTW, how's this for a keyboard :-)

What keyboard layout do you use L@@K?

On the French Canadian layout it is really to make the ^ accents appear and it's not even a french keyboard (2 keystrokes, no combos). Pretty much everyone who has used a keyboard before knows how to make them, at least here in Quebec.

If L@@K is indeed from France I would listen to him since he probably knowsa lot more about them than me . On pretty much anything else than geos we will have an equal say but for the proposed names i'd listen to him

Oh and L@@K, what is your opinion on the apostrophe names?
I personally would never reg a name with hyphen and apostrophe but would like to hear an opinion on this.

Yes I live in France.

We use AZERTY keybords as on picture.

For ô, you push ^ (near P) + o = ô
^ + i = î
(...)

For regular users, there's no pbm but for typ-in (= non regular users ??), it can be difficult (IMHO again)
More difficult than é, 100% sure !

And yes, you can have pbm if you are a french citizen taking french place. There's several examples, so I don't play with them !

About apostrophe & hyphens, frankly, it's impossible to generalize and others french will tell you maybe other opinions...

So follow your intuition, see GG, etc... ask me in PM if you want.
