Start registering names or do research?

I'm pretty new here should I just try to grab some expired domains or try to just register anything I can find available. I'm not fluent in any language except English.

You can do both things =P

Are dropping good names, but are still some good ones available.

Re: Start registering names or do research?

Guys there are plenty of decent unregistered names available. I urge you to give it a try. For Japanese - don't forget to try the .jp as well as .com/.net. More expensive but strong potential. Do some research first, then reg.

If you have a tight budget, do the research.

If you have money to burn, just register anything you can think of.

It is tough

Personally I think it is tough if you do not know the language. For example I know chinese, I know what name to check easily.

But I do not know arabic or hebrew. Don't think there is anyway I can go registering in those language unless I have lots of money to burn.

I'm talking about non-roman complex languages. It might be slightly easier with language like spanish, french.

Drops is a tough market and getting more difficult. I would advise against focusing there.

The headline grabbing names are almost certainly gone in Chinese, Japanese, Russian and Arabic, but there is still some good stuff out there.

Apart from English, I am not fluent in anything but French, where I a have invested absolutely nothing. Paradoxically, probably the easiest language to speculate in is Chinese, but there are a lack of analysis tools at the moment. There are good tools for Japanese and Russian. Arabic is important but there are a lot of pitfalls so I woud not start there.

There are still plenty of opportunities in Thai, but what the get all the bits above when you cut and paste, those are vowels.

Indian sub-continent is really still wide open, although most of the top words will have gone in Hindi, there is still Urdu, Bangla, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Gujarati and Marathi.

First port of call should be Wikipedia.org where you can learn quite a lot of useful background information on languages before you get going.

If you have a bigger budget, it might be worth having a look at what is for sale in the Forum. Might be more expensive than new regging but the quality is generally higher. If the Old Pros are bidding then you know your on the right tracks. You won't see these prices again. New regged domains are likely to go up thousands of times. Secondary market sill potential for x100 I would think!

Big company trademarks are not worth the $7 since they would be "enforced". I was tempted to take Mercedes.com (i was wondering if Mercedes is a trademark or a generic name of a person), but logic got the better hold of me at the last minute.
