The weird picture found on Japanese sites

I have found this same type of picture on many Japanese sites and I have no clue what the hell it is.

Can somebody say what these type of pictures mean and why Japanese people put them on their websites?

Re: The weird picture found on Japanese sites

You point your cell phone to it & it goes directly to a URL
This is another solution to get around the fact that Japanese couldn't remember or use ASCII domains well.

It is a bar coded URL used for Mobile Browsing with a Camera Phone I believe.

Actually it is a very good question and one I have just put to FS. This actually, as Olney has pointed out, highlights the need for IDN very graphically!

Re: The weird picture found on Japanese sites

You can also find pages on the web that code your url into 2d format so that you can put it on your websites. It's a good thing to do for the mobile relevant sites.

It is a clever enough idea. The big question, however, is why do the Japanese use it and the Americans don't? Does it simply can back to an inability to accurately recall ASCII web addresses or is there more to it? Perhaps Americans only adopt good ideas when they are their good ideas!

I wouldn't even know how to search for this type of site in Japanese. Would you please do us all a service and paste a link or two here? :-)

Thanks

Re: The weird picture found on Japanese sites

I use this one here

They're called QR codes. A simple search should reveal plenty more sites than can encode your URLs.

Thanks a lot!

Update: It works! My new Nokia N95 has a barcode reader, and I could not imagine why. I tried to scan a UPC code with it once, but nothing happened. I just generated an image from the site above and held my phone at the screen, and it beeped and showed me the URL with an option to open the link in the phone's browser!!!

Extremely cool.

The americans will adopt good ideas provided it makes money. Bar codes like that won't make money. But selling moby will!

Can I get a link to a phone that advertises the ability to read these?

Digital convergence used to give these out in Radio Shack in America. They went bellyup tho

scan a url offline and go to the site without entering it.

Or rather the technology hasn't actually advanced and they still cannot use their browsers!

Re: The weird picture found on Japanese sites

This is only good for mobile site so it's still used but the suggested search box became a "sort of" solution for PC sites...
That is until Japanese started to outrank the suggested keywords with IDNs & IDN subdomains...
