ICANN Ponders International Domain Names

Another mini article on the recent meeting of ICANN relating to IDNs

http://news.yahoo.com/s/pcworld/2007...VgS6Ryq9ojtBAF

QUOTE: In 2003, ICANN made an attempt to widen the acceptable characters but found that its rules were too permissive,
said Vint Cerf, ICANN's chairman. "There could be confusion between similar registrations that might mislead users," he
said during a conference call to discuss the meeting.

One potential source of confusion is that some characters in different alphabets might look similar but mean different things.
For example, in Cyrillic, the word for "restaurant" looks in the Latin alphabet like "pectopaht." That opens the door for
users to register domains in different languages in a way that could confuse users. ICANN hopes to develop rules that
will prevent such confusion.

ICANN plans to be able to test the use of international domain names live on the Internet by November. The test will
include a mechanism to take them out instantly if they create a problem, Cerf said. The group has already tested the
process in the lab. "We are confident that none of the infrastructure is likely to encounter problems but you never really
know until it's in that live environment," he said. END QUOTE

Re: ICANN Ponders International Domain Names

As far as I can ascertain, the intention is to complete the testing by November when a limited number of iccTLDs will be introduce as "analogs" of their existing ccTLDs. You need to read the Board Resolutions. That is what will tell you what has actually been agreed. Anything else is supposition to some degree.

Analog:
Noun: 1. Something that bears an analogy to something else: Surimi is marketed as an analogue of crabmeat.

Adjective: Relating to, or being a device in which data are represented by continuously variable, measurable,
physical quantities, such as length, width, voltage, or pressure.

I haven't read the report yet, but curious if they have outlined specifically what and how they propose to test the
root this time around.

Re: ICANN Ponders International Domain Names

All we know is that they are going to insert IDN.Test into the Root in various languages. Perhaps .example as well from some things I have read.

Whether they are going to generate traffic to test or just sit back in the expectation that some guy in Shangdong is going to randomly type in the chinese equivalent of .test, well your guess is a good as mine. I am getting the impression that they are going through the motions because they feel that they have to go through the motions, just to say they did it.

Time wise, this appears to be going to happen in October, prior to insertion of iccTLDs in November.
