Smile Chinese IDN: .COM or .CN ?

Hello all, I'm very new to IDN and would like to know your opinions on Chinese IDN in the .COM and .CN name spaces.

.COM is no doubt king of all domain extensions, but it looks to me the way simplified character and traditional characters are handled is not as well planned as it is done in the .CN space. (With .CN, you register the simplified version, and automatically get the traditional version, and vice versa) it's kind a bit messy to me in .COM

Chinese government and media are also promoting IDN.cn very extensively recently and encourage people move away from .COM (for obvious political and economic reasons).

Even though .COM is still in dominant position in China, but with lots of major local companies and government adopting .CN, it's quite possible .CN will build up momentum gradually.

However on the other side, there are also rumors saying how CNNIC (.CN governance body) can take valuable names away from someone simply because they want it.

So as a domainer, would you bet on IDN.COM or IDN.CN or both? And what's your existing portfolio is like?

This is known as 'deletion danger'.

Yes, names do get deleted, or even taken over by someone else, at least what i gather from native forums.

My opinion being that .cn is worth is bet, despite the deletion risk, but how much you would bet would depend on your risk appetite.

Myself am willing to bet $300 to $500 on a top .cn with the risk of deletion. Others might be willing to bet $3000 or more. So ultimately, buy with the knowledge that you might need to write off your investment.

The laws in China are construed so that everyone is guilty of something, and enforced at the whims.

Founder and editor Nick Young said the Beijing Statistical Bureau and city police ordered him last Wednesday to shut down the bimonthly electronic newsletter. He said he was told he had violated the statistics law by conducting "unauthorized surveys."

Neither newsletters do surveys, but Young said authorities made it clear the rule included "any kind of investigation ... even going out and talking to people."
Basically, this law can put anyone into jail! :p

Are you guys aware of any IDN.CN transactions in the past? And what are the values like?

Almost all that I've seen are IDN.com & .net....

Re: Chinese IDN: .COM or .CN ?

The main problem is that those who hold good cn domains have them with Chinese registrars, which can not be transfered to registrars under the foreign cn registration system, so it makes buying them on the after market difficult.

That is incorrect. Just bought my premium IDN from chinese guy who had it in chinese registrar, in this case forget domainsite and others, dynadot is the way to go. They were extremely helpful and had it transferred in under week.
