Idn .tv

would like to get your thoughts...

there is currently no clarity of what the future holds in regards to the extensions on idn domains.

icann is suggesting it's looking into several options and it appears it will be more then 2 yrs before we know which is it..dname or not...new extensions...etc

Logically IMO is that the value of idn.tv as long as the keyword fits the extension is huge for several reasons:

- when a user sees TV he/she knows what tv stands for (forget the fact it was originally tuvalu, obviously anyone would have the connotation of television
- i feel a strong matching idn .tv has a very attractive/hip/young/current feel to it
- it appears the integration of the internet and tv will only get stronger

i don't see any special interest with idn.tv auctions, even when the keyword is very strong and the prices the sellers offer them are low.
also, since the current type ins on idn's are practically non existent when comparing to ascii then the fact it is a .tv is not really an issue

your comments on the subject are appreciated.

You make a good point. I also feel that IDN .tv may be a good extension internationally with IDNs as TV is a transliteral word in some languages. The only limitation is that limited keywords fit the extension best. ie. news.tv, travel.tv, soccer.tv, auction.tv, cooking.tv, sports.tv, cityname.tv, etc. Some will not work too well ie. dieselfuel.tv.

Thanks Bill.

Sure the extension MUST fit or IMO it is worthless to own using your example dieselFuel .tv

BTW, just saw this now...companies it appears are starting to go more into the .tv space (check out mercedes-benz.tv and audi.tv to name a few)

Absolutely no idea where the 2 years comes from apart from Twomey who seems to sleep through all the ICANN seminars he attends.

It think it is a surefire certainty that we will have iccTLDs by year end in the Root and igTLDs in a limited form by the middle of next year. If we have half a dozen languages as dot com in the DNS by then who really gives a monkey's how long it takes to resolve the DNAME issue.

Hi Dave,

I took the 2yrs from what appears to be a mess with icann's progress and decision making progress and policies.

maybe quicker as you suggest and im sure no one here will oppose it,but for the record i personally assume the 2yr range as even if it will be done sooner...you must allow a minimum of 1yr for decent user adaptation.

what do you consider a limited form of igTLD's? and it would be interesting to hear your personal opinion on idn .tv's with a keyword that makes sense.

Thanks,
Michael.

I am not a big fan of dot TV, but I think dot TV will do well as an IDN with the Latin Extension. This is universally recognised, so there is no huge need to translate it. Same argument applies to dot com. It hardly requires any translation and indeed may not benefit from the introduction of IDN.IDN except perhaps in right to left languages such as Arabic. Dot CN desperately needs translation which is why the Chinese are pushing so hard.
