A Successful Search for Google

In mid June, the always low-key Google China suddenly went high profile.

Over three consecutive days, Google launched several new campaigns: a strategic partnership with China's No.1 news portal, Sina.com; the Google Industry Forum for clients with hundreds of marketing representatives from giant companies like Apple, BMW, Hewlett Packard, China Mobile, and Taobao; and "Media Day", which aimed to demonstrate Google's technological achievements from the past year.

During those three days, Kai-Fu Lee, vice president of Google and president of Google China, talked with people from various industries frequently. Lee now seems to be more at ease in his role as the senior executive of a multinational Internet company. He often likes to speak about the company's expectations and strategic roadmap.

Two months ago, when Google CEO Eric Schmidt was visiting China, he was bombarded with questions that probably embarrassed Lee: "How do you check the performance of Kai-Fu Lee?" "Why isn't Google doing as well in China?" "When is Google expected to make profits in China?" When Schmidt declared Google's plan to empower its China team, Lee took the opportunity to downplay rumors of his demise at the company.

Google China has since launched a massive marketing drive, signaling that Google is preparing for a tough battle in China. After an extended hibernation, Google is hoping its bad luck in China has finally run out.......
