My 1500th IDN

Just bought my 1500th idn.
Started in January; aiming for 2000 by the end of this year.
Then it will either be the millions $ or the poorhouse!

Cheers

Re: My 1500th IDN

I also made my first (unsollicited) sale this week as well (50$).
What's the average IDN holding do the regulars have here?
Just curious.

Re: My 1500th IDN

It must have taken a lot of foresight (and faith) to invest in IDNs a few years back.
As far as I'm concerned, the time was right for me and I actually made a business plan.
I always figure 30k-50k is a pretty basic amount to invest in any biz over a few years, be it realestate, a shop, stock, etc.
I did my research and came up with a pretty diversified portfolio; I'll see how it evolves over the next two years.
I also intend to develop a lot.

How did you get 1500 names if you just started 7 months ago? With the prime terms and second third prime terms gone what did you go after

Re: My 1500th IDN

Given the current highly speculative nature of IDNs, it wouldn't be a very strategic business plan if I told you exactly what segments I went after

You are mostly right about all the prime words being taken, but I believe there is much more to domaining than just going after the dictionnary and overture stats.
A lot of words/expression garner 0 views until the day you develop a bit, and then it can spead pretty fast if you got the right combination of name-content. Right now, it's next to impossible in the ascii world for fresh regs.

I can give you a few infos : I've got about 400 french words/expressions (because it's my langage), 300 probably-soon-to-be-useless symbols/dingbats (you win some, you lose some...), 300 spanish and various foreign items I'm culturaly fluent enough about, and the rest is pretty spread out.

I budgeted 15k for this year; it might take another year for things to really pick up, in which case I'll put another 10k of renewals next year. I expect a combination of developement/sales to cover loss and generate good revenue in two years.

Worst case scenario, I've lost 25k: the price of an average car...
Most people don't think twice about that kind of purchase.
IDN holds great promises; I'll never regret having exchanged buying a cheap car for that kind of opportunity!

Well done - anyone putting out the idea that there are no opportunities left in the IDN space is distinctly lacking in imagination. There are still massive opportunities in the ASCII space and in terms of tools, services and "players", that is 100 times more mature than the IDN world.

Re: My 1500th IDN

True.
The ascii crowd is so much more numerous; if only 10% directed their efforts into IDN (and they eventually will), you'd see a lot of inovative ways to monetized them.
But this is not to say that we have no imagination. To see the potential of IDN is to prove the oposite.

Re: My 1500th IDN

I think I own the least out most.
I only have 600 mainly broken into 10 markets that I believe have a high internet commercial value. In each category I believe I have about 3 to 4 of the top 10 (Maybe 15) terms (at least in jp).
That's why I didn't go for quantity.

I don't consider myself a quantity owner; 600 or 2000 is in a somewhat close range, compared to 5000 and up for domainers/businesses with serious budgets.
You got in early enough I guess, which comes with first pick at obvious good ones in your language of choice. You probably spent more in renewals as I did in fresh regs.
All the same; I believe I got some really nice gems! There are only so many of us right now, and a lot of avenues to explore.

Re: My 1500th IDN

I believe if you are one of the silent ones you probably got a good stash...
I also believe that there are still good domains out there in various markets..

Going - again! - in October, many friends there, and the odd casino

Good luck Pete, still opportunities in IDN.

You sure have been busy.

Are you only doing fresh regs, or also buying from auctions, etc?

Fresh regs only.
I spend an average of 10h per week on research, so there's no need to look at the secondary market for me right now.

Auction prices here are more than affordable though; if an investor wanted to skip the search altoghether, he could just get most of the 1$-20$ fire sales and probably benefit later on. We all bought a bit of junk, but for the most part some research was done on the good stuff we chose to discard.

It all comes down to how much you value your time.

I don't have the time or enthuisiasm to do Fresh Regging anymore, but I cannot resist a bargain in the aftermarket.
