A&F look costs UK shoppers double

By James Hall, Sunday Telegraph
Last Updated: 11:53pm BST 28/04/2007

Abercrombie & Fitch, the preppy US retailer that opened its first European store on London's Savile Row last month, has blocked UK shoppers from accessing its US website to compare the prices of its products.

The move follows the retailer's decision to charge UK shoppers up to double the amount they would pay for equivalent products in America.

Many clothes in Abercrombie & Fitch's London store are priced "pound for dollar", meaning that a polo shirt costing $49.50 in the US is priced £50 here. Current exchange rates mean that shoppers are paying the equivalent of $100 per shirt.

"It's outrageously expensive," said the chief executive of a rival clothing retailer.

Last night Austin Mitchell, the Labour MP for Grimsby and chair of the All-Party Group Consumer Affairs and Trading Standards, said that the high prices were "annoying" and "a bit of a warning not to shop in London".

With UK prices so high, a shopper need only buy 10 Abercrombie & Fitch polo shirts in London to have paid enough extra to buy a return flight to New York, the location of the next nearest Abercrombie & Fitch store.

Pound for dollar is the status quo in the UK on nearly all american goods;. there is nothing special about this store doing it.

Ahhhh yes, Rip-off Britian.

It's great living here. We always get the new products last, i.e after Japan and the US, and then we are charged 2x for the priviledge.

... still we got to keep all those imigrants in their comfortable lifestyle. Room service in London hotels isn't cheap you know
