Japanese company IDNers

I was just looking through an old list of domains and found myself impressed with the breadth of Japanese companies holding IDN .JP since 2003 and many from 2001. This is by no means exhaustive, it's just a random list I put together. Thought you guys would find it interesting. The only thing I haven't figured out is why exactly Calpis (a drink company) is holding "nude".

Canon actually dropped Digital Camera this year I certainly believe by mistake.
With changes of management etc, people not seeing the value immediately companies sometimes do loose some of their great assets.

And how does the .com list compare with this? Less Japanese companies holding .com, or more?

There is a company in Japan, a small unheard of registrar, who positions themselves as a "Trademark Consultant". They basically approach foreign firms and offer to get their names in Japan for them. Of course, their prices are sky high, and they only accept businesses as customers.

I suspect you will find this company as the registrar of at least a few of the above.

Job to tell but I did a Yahoo search on XN in the URL recently and it was noticeable that there are more developed sites. In Korean, it was even more impressive. Even the returns without proper headers and descriptions all seemed to have sophisticated developed sites. I don't know whether any adversing money is actually being thrown at these yet, but it is clear that an awful lot of preparatory work has gone into this, and that many companies are crouching in the starter blocks listening for the gun!

Do you know of any active IDN for large companies? Some of these are inactive and some redirect to ascii domains. Help us spread the word.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of companies with developed IDN addresses, some of them very big indeed.

It is, however, not highly significant until they start banging them into their off line advertising. They are not going to waste millions on ad campaigns until the market is ready and that means a reasonable level of browser support. I am guessing they will be happy to do this as soon as IE7 hits about 40%. They certainly don't need 100%, and the trend is as important as the raw numbers.

How do you know the domain belongs to yahoo? The whois is under privacy.

Wow. That was strange. What is the advantage to a registrant if he/she frames a site like that? No profit motive, WIPO risk... Strange. Do you think it is not Yahoo?

Might not be, but if the registrant think Privacy will stop Yahoo, he has got to be off his trolley!

I notice that the dot KR is pointing at an Adult site. Yahoo cannot be seen to let that one ride!

They could be gambling on getting incoming bookmarks if enough people start noticing/using the IDN and don't realise that it doesn't belong to Yahoo...

It definately does belong to Yahoo. Get this...when I opened the link to the Korean Yahoo it recognized me by my
Yahoo user name, then *WOW* automatically opened my EMAIL and previewed my messages right off the Korean site.

It can be a redirect to Yahoo, and yahoo can recognize you by your cookie on all their international sites, whether yahoo.jp, or yahoo.kr.
