The End User: Prospects in Europe diverge for 2 Japanese technology pioneers

PARIS: On the same day that one Japanese technology pioneer took a step backward in Europe, the executives of another were busy planning a European rollout, showing that all high-tech exports from Japan are not equal.

The missteps belong to NTT DoCoMo, whose i-mode mobile phone service revolutionized the telecommunications world when it started in Japan in 1999 by bringing electronic commerce to handsets. O2 in Britain said this week it would phase out the i-mode service there because of a lack of interest.

The expansion plans belong to Rakuten, which runs Japan's biggest online mall, with nearly 40 million users and sales last year of ¥460 billion, or $1.6 billion.

It has made a name for itself by serving as the Internet storefront for tens of thousands of small and medium-sized merchants - the Amazon.com of Japan, as it were, but without the inventory or the focus on big brands.....

Re: The End User: Prospects in Europe diverge for 2 Japanese technology pioneers

In China Taobao is the next one who will succeed in this area... oh, how I wish I had different skills and the foresight to have done this...

Very interesting they are expanding... I will look forward to see how well it works for them in Europe... is an interesting area (Asia companies breaking into the West in Technology area - shows times are changing).

Thanks for article - cheers, Asiaplay

I tried i-mode service in Russia, and it was garbage! No wonder they are dumping it.

Or rather, how little the Japanese DoCoMo company understood foreign markets and mobile phone styles.

I-Mode depended on locking in certain providers and hand picking content in a closed ecosystem.

iPhone uses standard webpages with a standard browser in an open ecosystem, ie. the real internet.

Closed systems with monopolized services are going the way of the DoDo.
