Chasing a dream on China's dot-com frontier

BEIJING — In the office after hours, the Chinese economic miracle didn't feel much like magic.

Cubicles were empty for the night. Among the last to leave the office of Internet startup HiU were Jacques Ding and Susan Su, the entrepreneurs who had everything on the line.

After more than 18 months in business, they had pitched their idea to top venture capitalists but were still hunting for the backing they needed; they had attracted advertisers and more than 1.5 million members but needed many more; and they had poured years of savings into the business without knowing whether it would survive.

To follow the ups and downs of a single Chinese startup, one among thousands today, is to glimpse how entrepreneurs are battling for an edge in the world's hottest Internet boom. The changes sweeping China in the early 21st century not only are ushering millions of people into the middle class; they are also spurring many others to reach for a life beyond it.......

Re: Chasing a dream on China's dot-com frontier

Interesting article... and scary to think they had all the local skills from the start - perhaps just did not the best investment or marketing plan to start (or free programming skills)... others who have been successful had both angles covered (or that thing in business we all need - luck...).

However could be an investment story of any kind in China - the foundation and marketing plan must be very good for an investment to work (and choice of partner must add to the business in more than just name).

Without this - things are just a gamble, which one has a higher chance of losing.
Hope therefore people here have more plan than just buy Chinese IDNs and cross their fingers for the future

Thanks for post - gets me thinking as well.

Cheers - Asiaplay

Those that will prove most successful will have done precisely that!

Why? Because right back in 2001, Unicode sites hardly existed, nor did online translation, and there was certainly no indexation by search engines, let alone all the stats that the Johnny Come Latelies twitter on about.

When I arrived in 2004 most site were stilll pinyin or bitmaps, but that was changing fast, but only really in the Far East. Arabic still was indexed by Google. That didn't happen for another year or so.

The bottom line is that those that are waiting for proof will end up with next to sod all.

Touchring... haha - good to get a refresher though - lol...

Agree Rubberduck - you are the one I think, who probably has the best plan of all in this forum for .cn (and my general comment was not aimed at you in any way at all for this reason).
I even see that you have some advice on Chinese terms and do not just randomly buy (interesting to see what Chinese IDNs you bypass on actually)...

I am really interested to watch what additional steps you personally take to build the marker further for IDNs and know you will do well

Cheers - Asiaplay.
