Funny Comedian tours China: My God! Mini-London in Shanghai?

This is a funny video by Brit comedian Paul Merton.

Btw, I thought i went there was it not yet completely built in 2003, if it's the same European theme town built on former rice fields.

Yeah - started watching them all...

I can waste hours giggling over his whole series... funny really as is just normal everyday happenings and lines which can be humerous...

Rubberduck - true this is tame for a British Comedian... guess ya gave him some cultural sensitivity training before he set off (but is the nice part of British humour - often is the subtle, what is not said that makes it a laugh) - hehe... cheers, Asiaplay

PS: but people can really learn from these videos... as say, it is the day in the life of China...

Paul Merton is one of the funniest guys that ever walked, but this is really just him in documentary mode.

It is largely a comedy, a lot of the personality in the show i suspect are part of the cast, if you notice they speak too good British english.

A lot of the theme is not everyday life, but some of the more weird stuff you find in China, and which you wouldn't find if you visit as a tourist.

Touchring.... to me at the most he might have known the "translator"... but even then she definitely grew up in China (due to her Mandarin accent & fluency etc.) - she may have studied in the UK true.

But really I do not think any of the other people are ring-in personality talent who have been told to say anything - just that they cut the footage to be funny (i.e. cut a lot out that was not funny).

Opps - guess I do not go to China as a tourist so often (and even if do - is Chinese tours)... haha,
To me this is a part of everyday life (true some sides of everyday life are not shown in these clips and not everyone lives in little London - or as he shows, almost no one does - smile...).

But I really think this is just filming of a tourist and translator wandering around (funny lines from peoples personalities are more due to cultural differences or things that exist in China, rather than staged as I see it - ok, cutting of video as I say helps make it funny). For example the Chengdu woman telling him that the most beautiful woman in China are from that city... and later the translators explanation on the train - that girls in every city tell you the same (is true and funny lol)

Cheers, Asiaplay

That's true. I think there are a lot of stereotypes, but there is no one chinese culture - diversity is as wide as Europe. That people are dancing on the streets in chengdu and chongqing defeats all stereotyped thoughts, and difficult to comprehend.

Touchring - true...

Even more true that there is now a reasonable number of people who want to be "international" and therefore do what they consider to be Western things (often in an unusual way).

Hehe - but agree - what is missed (as guess is not funny) is the cultural traditional side of life which still exists very strongly.

We have to catch up for a drink or "tea" next time you pass through.

Cheers, Asiaplay

Sure, it's funny. I might be visiting Macau to see the casino industry soon, maybe pop by HK.

I doubt that was necessary. Merton excels at live unscripted stuff. He is quite capable of making it up as he goes along. If you handed him a script he would almost certainly say " What's this?", before tearing your ego into a million pieces!
