Wikipedia: List of regions by past GDP (PPP)

Just found this, interesting as it goes back the last 2000 year and makes an estimate of every era:

Just a few snapshots:

1st century, Indian Subcontinent triumphs at 32.9%, followed by the Han dynasty China at 26.2%. Han China at that time excludes Tibet, Manchuria, Fujian, Zhejiang, Taiwan island, Yunnan, and Gansu provinces. Indian Subcontinent is made up of many kingdoms. Roman empire 3rd at 21.5%. Russia and Japan at around 1%.

If we consider by 'countries', there are only 2 countries with more than 1% share, the Roman empire and Han China:

For the next 1500 years, India subcontinent was a little bigger than China until the last Han Chinese dynasty, Ming dynasty. Russia and Japan rose to about 3%. France was the leading european power at 4.7%. In comparison UK, only 1.8%. :

This was at the peak of the Manchurian Qing dynasty, before the Opium, closed door policy, backward in science and technology, and China was basically trading with itself most of the time. France was the strongest european power at that time. Russian empire follows next.:

1913, a few years after the collapse of the Qing dynasty, peak of the British empire, China's percentage went down to 8.9%. US rises, close to first, British empire (British india is separate), then followed by Germany at 8.8%:

1950, formation of communist China, China was at the same level as India Republic, around 4%. US at 27.3% occupies the dominant position after winning WWII. Britain fell to 6%. Soviet union 2nd at 9.6%. Japan after WWII, stands at 3%:

1998: Just a few years after China started economic reforms in inland China after success in Shenzhen. China's percentage rose to 11.5%. US leads with 21.9%. Britain fell to 3.4%. Japan surged to 7.7%:
