warning about .net's

Depending on how ".net" will be translated, when IDN.IDN comes, .NET's may be worthless in Russian.

Although right now, they are worth something, but only if the grammar is correct.

As you may know, нет (pronounced "net") means NO in Russian, and a whole bunch of other Slavic languages.

So, if you register a .net, you are negating the term, and/or, creating a meaningless domain. It is like having a domain name ".NO" or ".NOT" in English.

FINANCES.NOT or MONEY.NO not only sounds foolish, but it is poor English grammar, and that's exactly how these domains sound like in Russian. The humorous value of the slang "FUNNY... NOT" doesn't apply here either, since there's no such thing in Russian.

Re: warning about .net's

If Russians don't avoid .net domains right now, I don't think they'll avoid .нет domains later.

I would also hope that the Russian representative to ICANN or Verisign would offer some input if .нет would indeed be problematic. Maybe they would rather use .сет as I believe those are the first three letters for 'network'.

Either way, it's a little too early to panic.

Re: warning about .net's

I have a feeling ICAAN will go for .нет despite, or because of the humor value. A grammatically correct .нет would be very valuable. I get lots of hits on those every day even now.

.сет should be .сеть then.

Re: warning about .net's

.сет makes a lot more sense if those are the first three letters of the russian word for "network", right ?

Except that .сет sounds bad. It's best to have either .сеть or .нет

Re: warning about .net's

I am sure ICANN will take everything into account when deciding what to use. I wouldn't go as far as calling .nets "worthless", since it's not the meaning, but rather the "ease to remember" that counts.

Re: warning about .net's

I think some sites use нэт as net which I think my Russian friend said would be the correct transliteration of the word. Maybe another alternative to consider....

Just my opinion: if ICAAN makes it .нэт, I'm dumping all my .net's.

Re: warning about .net's

I was looking and I couldn't find one russian term in .net that I own. Did I get in early enough not to worry about the .net ext?

Oh just wait I got kom.net. The russian equivalent for .net should be .het.
