If this is not a limitation of the "forum" module, then this must be a defauly setting as I have seen the same thing in other forums. Even if it's a "limitation" of this software, I'm sure it's as simple as changing the SQL query that retrieves the results...

It is just to keep people from exploiting the server. if it was a huge # the server would have to work harder and kill the whole site.

Did olney ever move the site? It seems to run pretty smooth nowadays.
