China, India lead surge in mobile subscribers: report

GENEVA (AFP) — Asia's booming economic powerhouses of China and India are leading a fresh surge in mobile phone use with nearly 200 million new subscribers between them in the first quarter of 2007, the United Nations telecommunications agency said on Tuesday.

China added 87 million new subscribers in the period and India about 110 million, the International Telecommunications Union said in a report.....

Nice!

The problem which has been slowing mobile growth in India is basically the inability to grow the networks fast enough to keep up with demand. The other big problem is reliability of power - every new lamp which is plugged in potentially breaks the camel's back. Network elements need electricity in order to function...

Power outages are so frequent in India that you just can't function with a normal PC, you need a laptop which can automatically switch back and forth from battery to electricity.

For the acolytes of TRAFFICS, on annualised basis that means the 100 dollar a year peasants are taking them up at a rate of 3 to 4 times the entire subscriber base of the US.

Nothing commercially interesting going on there then, is there Mr Schwartz?
