"It is impossible for China to split...."

QUOTE FROM ARTICLE
Liu also denied that China would create its own domain name system in Chinese language, in response to a recent English report from People's Daily which misled readers to believe that China would use the .CN domain extension to replace .COM and .NET.

"The report about .CN domain name was misinterpreted by the People's Daily, which also brought us a lot of trouble and inquires," said Liu. "It is impossible for China to split the global Internet domain name system and operate our own root servers separately. END QUOTE

That is good news for all.

Re: China calls for ICANN to enable multi-language Top Level Domain system

This is really a good news.

China's role in leading the world in getting IDN implemented will be seen more vividly in the next few months, but if my judgement is correct, China's effort will ultimately benefit IDN.com the most.

in commemoration to this good news and the sale of 東京.net, I therefore registered 喜讯.com (good news) 2 minutes ago. :-)

Thank you idnowner.

Re: China calls for ICANN to enable multi-language Top Level Domain system

How to play around with .中国

On the Mac:

Go to your network control panel, record your current "DNS servers" settings, so you can restore normal operation later, then replace them with

61.139.76.55

Then go to your browser and try to get to http://中国.中国/

Enjoy!

Re: China calls for ICANN to enable multi-language Top Level Domain system

Thanks Giant,
I bet you are one of these 15.
I knew Idnowner before I knew this forum. In fact it was Idnowner referred me to join this forum, through email communications.
He owns many top Japanese domains too (in response to one of my email offers to a domain of his, he told me that he is not even going to sell it for half mil).

I know, but I can't tell you :-).

It has something to do with how the intellectuals in China are aware of the outside world, and try to adopt what they think is better. The pictures just tell you they are just at their half way point of their total adoption.

They should get with it and wear 漢服. Let's forget about these English clothes along with ascii domains.

It's interesting you ask the right question, and I am the very few can give you the answer.

When Jack Ma started his company, he did not know he could succeed so well. The name Alibaba can be so popular in China is by luck and by chance. Chinese outside China prefer Chinese name for their business, but business run by local people in China often choose foreign names because of the novelty. I expect the use of foreign names to decrease when the Chinese in China realize they themselves are the novelty of the world. What country do you want to put your investment money in? China. What foreign language do you want to learn? Chinese. What domain names do you want to keep in your portfolio? Chinese...

"Alibaba" is a Pinyin name - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinyin. Jack Ma probably chose it because the name is available, and perhaps due to his school teacher background - he probably taught the Alibaba story!

阿 A1
里 Li3
巴 Ba1
巴 Ba1

Pinyin is very strong in China, kindergarden kids are taught Pinyin so that they can pronounce Chinese words they learn - it's equivalent to the Japanese Kana form of Chinese.

As yet, IDNs have not taken off on Chinese idn forums due to perceived preference for Pinyin and number domains. Of cos, we're all betting that this would change in the future.
