Google and Asia lead the way as global searches exceed 60 billion in August

The global Internet audience is estimated to be close to 800 million people who are at least 15 years of age and older. Of those Web users, 95% of them conducted 61 billion searches worldwide in August, which works out to more than 80 each, according to a new study from comScore Inc.

The Asia-Pacific region, which includes huge markets like China, Japan and India, led the way with 20.3 billion searches. Europe was next at 18 billion, while North America took third place with 16 billion searches.

And guess who got the lion’s share of the traffic?

That’s right, Google. The search giant’s site ranked as the top global search property in August with 37.1 billion searches conducted.

While the Google search engine received 31 billion of these searches, YouTube.com came in with a whopping 5 billion. That compares with Yahoo! sites at 8.5 billion and Chinese-language Baidu.com with more than 3.2 billion. Microsoft sites ranked fourth with 2.1 billion.

“Seeing Asian search engines like China’s Baidu.com and Korea’s NHN ranked alongside Google and Yahoo! underscores the fact that search has become a truly global phenomenon,” Bob Ivins, executive vice president of International Markets at comScore said in a statement. “The continued development of search in international markets will undoubtedly present compelling opportunities for savvy marketers on a global scale.”
