japanese regions

I have regged these regions :

North East district 東北地方.com wikipedia
Chubu district 中部地方.com wikipedia
Chinese district 中国地方.com wikipedia
Kinki district 近畿地方.com wikipedia
Kanto district 関東地方.com wikipedia

My question, why were they available ?

One can strip out the last 2 kanjis are still make sense, and the shorter version
is more commonly searched.

Except "中国地方＂， in which case, it has a potential conflict with China...

Yes, I picked up two regions back along which had almost certainly dropped in two characters. Didn't think the market was ready to go to four at that time. Would probably have been back, but you got there first!

I am not sure, but I got the impression that the Regions, whilst of cultural importance have no real political status and there the full titles are perhaps not as useful as the full titles of cities and prefectures, which do.
