IDN.IDN ccTLD next summer?

Stop me if this has already been posted....

ICANN chair to fast-track Internationalised Domain Names

Quote:
Non-English-speaking nations could begin using their own scripts for top level domain names as early as mid-2008 says the new chairman of ICANN, New Zealand lawyer Peter Dengate Thrush.

Dengate Thrush, who was elected unopposed as the international body's new chairman last Friday, says fast-tracking the Internationalised Domain Names process will be one of his first challenges heading up the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

Introduction of the localised top level domain system, he says, will allow countries such as Japan and others use their own script instead of English. That means rightmost suffixes such as .jp and .de can be replaced by local language scripts.

My guess is that a few nations will follow the Chinese example and pre-empt ICANN on this one. Selling names before they resolve is nothing new. My guess is as soon as they have tacit agreement within the ccNSO, Russia, Japan and others will make their intentions clear. I think Japan will simply state that theirs will be aliased. Russia could start it sunrise any time from January onwards.

What exactly are they planning to alias .de with? That he used such a clueless example clearly indicates his lack of intimacy with the subject matter.

$10 says he didn't say that, and the writer of the article added that sentence.

That is about the state of journalism at the moment. Paraphrase stuff you found elsewhere on the Internet and then make up bits to fill in the gaps.
