I like his quote "Looks like a million bucks won't even buy you a decent country these days".

Re: Article: Monikers GeoDomain Auction Flops

One of the responses to this article questions how much was spent on publicity for the Geo event; there seems to be quite a few domainers who didn't know it was happening. Lack of publicity might well be, at least, partly responsible for the flop.

I think Moniker has their mailing lists and certainly the "regular" domain community was aware. As repeatedly commented
many times before the event, most felt the list lacked substance and probably 95% were overpriced 2nd tier names. The
sellers had very high expectations and too many names had reserves set too high to get the auction "going". A lot of the
psychology of an auction is to get the buyers into the "game" and that just didn't seem to happen here.

A good number of those were real estate names and, frankly, anyone with a pulse knows that all of the numbers are down in real estate.

Real estate is cyclical, we had a huge real estate slump back in the 80's when interest rates on houses was at 12-13%.
If you remember back, real estate go trounced again in the early 90's. Now it is happening again but this time caused by
greedy lenders who let the market get out of control. Now there is going to be a long correction period.

This auction seemed to be mostly domainer to domainer sales and most know there is only "one each" of premium
domain names. The reserves for 2nd tier names were just too high; I think that is what killed this auction.

I think that far too many of the names did not even rate second tier, check out some of the garbage in the upcoming CAC.

Yep, they are losing the plot big time in ASCII two land. Any old gibberish will do as long as there are no funny characters!

I was just being polite. lol

THIS WAS ON FS BLOG, THE WRITER HIT THE NAIL RIGHT ON THE HEAD...(1) MARKETING OF AUCTION
(2) KNOWLEDGABLE AND PROFESSIONAL DOMAIN AUCTIONEERS

QUOTE: "No doubt numbers of bidders (especially who they are a Domainer or an End user), sellers prices, and venue managers choice of Domains have a lot to do with the success (or lack of it) of any auction…

Having watched or listened to many of the TRAFFIC, DRT, Domainfest, Geo, auctions…I can tell you that the above are not the problem…throughout all of the auctions…there is one thing in common to them all that holds back each, from being Great!!!!

There isn’t a single Auctioneer So Far, that has a clue about domains, and can work what he knows about the domains he is auctioning, into his bidding routine, he cant work the crowd (knowing your bidders is a must) as is knowing the potential of each domain, its earnings and where, the background of the industry it is in, why it is valuable and to whom….

The Auctioneers have been the BIGGEST detriment to the Auctions success overall (across the Board) in every Domain Auction I have seen.

If you want these Auctions to be GREAT you need to have 3 or 4 Good to Great Domainers Do the Auctioning)that know all the Industries and all the Players within the Industries…Domainers and end users alike.

It would be easier to teach a Domainer to be an Auctioneer, than to teach an Auctioneer to be a Domainer

1 Domainer that can actually verbally run an Auction, and 3 working the Crowd, the People they” know” should be interested, talking up the selling points, the value points, the Numbers of Each Domain, the Dollars in the Market the Domain is used in, and Common sense appreciation of the Value to an end user that the Bidder may end up selling to, if the Bidder is another Domainer Speculating.

You need to have a Domainer Auctioneer that is Passionate and knows the Business inside and out….and that is the Bottom Line.

But equally as important, is the Pre Auction work the Auctioneers and Auction Promoters, should be doing and are not.

They need more Promotion of the Auctions’ Domains, to the People (Domainers and end users) in the various Industries, the Domains in the Auction can serve." END QUOTE
