China plans to merge HK and Shenzhen.

What will the new city be called? Hongzhen? And what script will they use?

By 2020, Shenzhen, a southern Chinese city, and Hong Kong will be integrated into one mega-city. When Shenzhen and Hong Kong are merged, it is likely that the world’s third largest city will be created, following New York and Tokyo, in terms of the gross product. On November 22, the Chinese media reported that the "Comprehensive Plan for Shenzhen (2007-2020)," elaborating on the integration of Shenzhen and Hong Kong, had been disclosed for the first time on the previous day.
It will be a odd combo, one that combines a service economy with a manufacturing powerhouse.

Re: China plans to merge HK and Shenzhen.

i couldn't find the same report from any web sites other than this korean site, and i sereiously doubt about it!

china has promised to keep hongkong unchanged for 50 years and as you said, it simply doesn't make sense and isn't possible to merge the two cities with all the political and economical factors. IMHO.

Didn't get the bit about being behind New York and Tokyo. New York is already way behind Tokyo and probably also London. I don't see anyway on God's Earth New York is going to be the the number one Metropolis by 2020. I would think Shanghai and Mumbai would have to be up there. I think London will be ahead of New York, but possibly not Shenzen!

BEIJING - Internet users in southwest China who spread malicious rumors online face fines of up to 5,000 yuan ($630) and possible detention, state media reported on Friday, in the latest crackdown on dissent. Among those rumors mentioned was that of the renaming of Hong Kong which is to be combined with Shenzhen provice. According to the "malicious rumor makers" it is to be called Xinjing (新京).

Haha - "New Capital"... lol... this is a funny one (perhaps 70 years too late however, given Cantonese only missed becoming the National language by 2 votes)... cheers, Asiaplay
