Yahoo! India and Jagran Group launch a new co-branded Hindi news and current affairs

Yahoo! India and the Jagran Group today jointly announced the launch of a new co-branded Hindi news and current affairs Internet property. The new property will seamlessly integrate the largest Hindi content of Jagran with Yahoo! India’s formidable online presence.

This pioneering agreement brings together India’s number one Internet brand and a leading Indian newspaper conglomerate to provide the best of both online services and print media content for users and advertisers.

The partnership will create a richer online Hindi user experience, with Jagran’s original content across news, current affairs, sports, entertainment and other features. It will be complemented with Yahoo!’s innovative, user-focused internet products and services offered in seven Indian languages, including Yahoo! Search, Mail and Messenger.

Under the terms of the agreement, Jagran and Yahoo! India will share graphical and keyword advertising revenue generated by the property with Yahoo! India managing the advertising sales and ad-serving for the new co-branded property. Both companies will also partner in distributing Yahoo! India’s search and small and medium business offerings.....

So now in the past few weeks we have seen AOL, Nokia, and Yahoo all moving to compete for the Hindi audience. Now all they need to do is give them computers, electricity, and credit cards! (J/K)

The newspapers are dominated by Hindi, but online is dominated by English. This could be reflective on the social status and economic power of the masses; less educated and less wealthy people buy a newspaper and may not know English very well while the social elite prefer English. It might be a trick to get the former group all online...

I did see some comment on India now having 40% growth, and projections of 100 Million Online by 2010.

Another interesting statistics is that 54% of the population are under the age of 20 years old. That actually makes the potential online audience far higher than that of China!

strangely enough tamil seems to be the most developed of the hindic languages,
one step ahead of hindi and way ahead of all the other in internet presence, either tamil nadu has a stronger net development or the cause lies in tamil speakers outside india namely singapore and large immigrant communities around the world, anyway it will be interesting to see how future trends develop.
