you are right, alfa. and i have no animosity against foreigners investing in Japanese IDNs. you guys are my potential business partners in the future. and i would like to keep good terms with you. it's just that i don't want to actively promote, or help them find good names left unregged, which i believe is just a matter of choice. after all, we are in competition as well as in cooperation.

also, all none japanese domainers should be aware that foreigners owning IDN.jp domains without development capability will have a very high chance of losing ownership disputes. of course, you can argue you would be outsourcing, etc, but i doubt very much if it works. JPRS is clearly against ppl who purchase domains just to flip or park. and there is a good chance that the Japanese arbitration center would judge any foreigners owning undeveloped .jp domains have reged them with a bad (or wrong) faith. you may say it's irrational, but the center has already displayed clear lack of rationality in past cases. so you'd better be aware of this.

it's just my opinion, too.

best,
ryu

in fact, in certain genres, it appears that some ppl prefer .net to .com.
however, in other genres, .net seems be disliked by many.
Without divulging too much Ryu -

Would サーフ.net (surf.net) translate well into a brandable Japanese .net? (I regged over a year ago..)

I know this isn't an appraisal thread, but it is in the spirit of this discussion

Thanks for your opinion....

What level of develpment do you have in mind here Ryu? We talking wikisite, or full blown commercial?

Also, examples of .jp sites being hijacked in the past have been by Japanese nationals against fellow Japanese nationals, no? Not against foreign owners..at least that I was aware of.

that's difficult to answer. the domain name sounds fairly good but not that great. also the word makes me imagine surfing in the ocean, and not web surfing.

Thanks Ryu - better marketing as a wave surfing site, than a web surfing site

Back to the .jp issue - my best .jp for this month as been チキン.jp (chicken.jp)

Without development of this site beyond a parikng page, this cod be hijacked by someone in mainland Japan - and taken from me?

The main reason I ask is I know of a nice bunch of .jp's that are available if I find the $$$ dollars...but I could lose them in the long run to someone who puts a trademark on them (this comes up from memories of an old thread along similar lines...)

i wouldn't regard a wikisite as an developed site. it may be considered worse than no development at all, IMO.

that's another issue altogether. just like any other country, japan has its share of bad guys.

チキン is no doubt a generic word, so unless they is already a japanese website entitled チキン.jp, you should be safe.

also, japanese ppl usually try their best to avoid any dispute brought into official arbitration. so you needn't to be too afraid.

Re: Japanese keywords in .net

Ok - end of the day if you have a .jp, try to develop it into the most legit commercial domain that you can...ASAP?

This is the best defence against someone who might try to take it from you?

I only ask so boldly because you are a valued member here Ryu, and your opinion on this may hold influence amongst potential investors reading this thread...

Thanks for your opinion...

that'd be the best option. but i think it is also a very unrealistic option unless you have lots of $$ to spend on outsourcing.

so, my best advice for you is, stay away from .jp domains in the gray zone.

i am afraid nope. i am quite keen to know the result, too. i think in the Mainichi case the owner of IDN "should" win, unless s/he said something stupid during his/her communication with the newspaper company. but i know the arbitration center has been very pro big corporations.
