.com or .cn? What is worth more?

What are people's opinions in this particular market (China).

Is .com worth more than .cn? What will or what do locals prefer?

Difficult call that one! But we all know which costs more.

The Chinese are very familiar with dot com and to date the number of high profile site using dot com is much larger than the use of dot cn, which has also been exclusively used by government in PRC.

China takes its extension seriously now and it has been expanding rapidly in the last few months. China also intends or has adopted First Level IDN, ie the bit after the dot in is in local lingo. This will go a long way to help adoption and if Verisign aren't able to resolve the issues around First Level gTLDs which need Multichannel Translation and are therefore more problematic, it will boost dot CNs relative position.

On the other side of things, people might feel more secure in a dot com, which is still administered in the US.

China is also a huge market and it therefore probably has room for both and more besides.

I have put my money on dot com, as I think that will be the best solution. Unless dot CN prices come down a lot, it is difficult to see how dot CN can really compete.

Cheapest I could find was a $23. Expensive.

I noticed that when you enter an IDN into the input box at domainstate, the subsequent screen displays a checkbox for .cn, but it's always listed as "Taken". This happens even with nonsense domains that are certainly not "Taken".

What gives? Do they not support .cn registrations at this time?

Don't think registeries outside China can do IDN yet on .CN

All Govment, school and other institution of China will chose 中文.cn than 中文.com

It is the trends of Chinese IDN. If you have invested in IDN.com, sell it to clear old stock, without terminal user to build site, domain name will lost it's vitality.

.cn gets the push from governments, and is popular among organizations as well, but type-in habits are hard to die, so .com gets most of the traffic.

that was quick, 2 years has passed, hence the importance of treating IDNing as a hobby rather than pure investment. You don't know how long you need to wait!!

I remembered that the .cn field was quite tough even in dec 2005, most of the better .cn were registered since 2001 or 2003. Surely there were way more .cn registered than .jp at that time. In the early days, chinese registrars didn't offer idn.com so people went for idn.cn instead. I was told, many people then didn't know that .com supported idn, or "chinese domains", as the chinese call them.

I remember regging my first IDNs in 2001. They were Chinese dot coms, though. Of course I dropped them later after no browser support and no hope of traffic. Expensive toys ($35/yr reg fees back then, maybe it was more for IDN, can't remember). They probably weren't that great, anyway. Can't even remember what they were. Zodiac signs, I think. I copy/pasted several translations and was surprised that most I tried were already registered.

I just looked back at my early regs from 2005. Funny. If I knew then.....

Well I can't recall anyone spending 4 figures on a dot CN, let alone 5, which dot Coms have achieved. Still big money ain't always smart money.

I won't get the Chinese market until they all stop registering with the express intention of selling them onto me. A rational market is where they use their local knowledge to acquire here and sell on to Chinese residents, not the other way. Seems to me there is precious little belief amongst Chinese people as to the validity of their own language. Before anything goes anywhere that at least has to change!

I've sold 3 .cn domains this year at 4 figures and 1 at 5 figures. And that's just my sales.

Majority of them are/were high profile members on this forum but requested to remain anonymous.
