Re: Regarding the japanese single char. auction
If no bid is placed seller is free to do as he pleases with domains. If he has agreed to sell them to you, then you are the lucky winner!

I'm only down to JP OVT, but Olney, Edwin or Ryu might share some light on their usage.
Hey, RD posted a pic of the keyboard. Looks like the smaller case needs a shift press?

Forget Olney and Edwin. They authoritatively informed me they were worthless a couple of year ago!
My single characters get much more traffic than my generics and despite his scepticism, Rhys was unable to disprove my assertion that they were the only real clear evidence of direct type-in we have from Japan.
You need to understand the difference between Katakana and Hirigana. You also need to be aware that there are some "Small" characters that are have specific uses that set them apart and probably make them less valuable.
My view is that Hirigana dot coms should be fetching Mid to High $x,xxx at this stage of the game with the capacity to rise to $xxx, xxx or even $x,xxx, xxx.
At the end of the day, it is down to the individual to call his own bet.

Re: Regarding the japanese single char. auction
Excuse my ignorance...are Kenne's domains all Katakana or Hirigana?
What i am missing is with all due respect to anyone's opinion...IF these are typed like you would type b.com or g.com then i dont see how they are not worth a serious amount of money? doesnt serve my interest as a buyer to say that but ill deal with that

Re: Regarding the japanese single char. auction
There are basically three sets of characters in Japanese.
One is Kanji or Chinese Script.
The other are both Kana. Phonetic alphabets. There are actually other phonetic alphabets in addition to these but they are not much used.
The other distinction between these alphabets and Latin is that vowels are included in the consonants. Effectively each character is two letters in Western understanding. For this reason there are more characters as there are basically five forms of most consonants, although this is offset by having fewer basic sounds.
か ka き ki く ku け ke こ ko
Hiragana is used for writing Japanese Words. Katakana is used for writing foreign words. To my knowledge you can shift the keyboard from one to the other. So in sense they are both single keystrokes. The home setting though and those marked on the keys are generally hiragana.

According to the current market Katakana is worth more than Hirigana, as the only data we have is this auction. Katakana is attracting higher bids than Hirigana!

Re: Regarding the japanese single char. auction
these are phonetic modifiers.
for example リ = ri
リョ = ryo
リヨ = riyo
i dont have a japanese keyboard so i cant remember if they are single or not.
i think that single chars in any alphabet would be worth a shed load after a while...

I think we are seeing a distortion here because the bidders are not Japanese.
I believe the Japanese themselves would favour Hiragana, but I could always be wrong!

My friend used to study & work in Japan for about 10 years -
and he told me that "Hirigana is better than Katakana" before (around 2 years ago); but his work was nothing todo with the domain name

Re: Regarding the japanese single char. auction
there are more than one way people can use to type japanese characters.
personally, i would type these domains in following ways:
ッ.com: ltsu + F7 + Enter + (switch to latin) + .com
ァ.com: la + F7 + Enter + (switch to latin) + .com
ョ.com: lyo + F7 + Enter + (switch to latin) + .com
ュ.com: lyu + F7 + Enter + (switch to latin) + .com
ル.com: ru + F7 + Enter + (switch to latin) + .com
ぶ.com: bu + Enter + (switch to latin) + .com
ぜ.com: ze + Enter + (switch to latin) + .com
ツ.com: tsu + F7 + Enter + (switch to latin) + .com
ヒ.com: hi + F7 + Enter + (switch to latin) + .com
ヘ.com: he + Enter + (switch to latin) + .com
ず.com: zu + Enter + (switch to latin) + .com
in short, none of these are remotely comparable to one-char-domains of english.
do i think these domains are valuable?
haha... perhaps to domain collectors like many of you here....
i think the reason why ル.com is valued the most here is because it looks better than the others.
on the other hand, some of the above domains look and sound terrible to japanese eyes (and ears).
i am sure no japanese person would want to build a proper website using them.
btw, single japanese kanji.whatever is also not that easy for japanese to type in.
especially when it comes to barely used kanji.blabla (like 粧.com that was on the appraisal thread the other day), it's as difficult as typing in abcdefghijklmn.com.
