Angry Chinese Blogger Beaten To Death By Government Officials

A Chinese blogger has been beaten to death by Government authorities for the crime of attempting to record a protest on his mobile phone.

When Wei was present at some sort of confrontation or protest by local villages against municipal authorities when more than 50 municipal inspectors turned on him, attacking him for five minutes.

According to CNN, the killing has sparked outrage in China, “with thousands expressing outrage in Chinese Internet chat rooms, often the only outlet for public criticism of the government.”

The Chinese Government has moved swiftly to detain those involved, arresting 24 municipal inspectors whilst investigating more than 100 others in relation to the incident. Notably (for China) the story was published by the official state news service Xinhua, in what is believed to be an attempt to head off dissent over the mater by demonstrating that the Chinese Government does not condone those involved in the beating.

China has a long way to go.

It is disappointing to see news like this.

However, it is encouraging that, viewed over time, China is moving in the right direction.

I think I was reading that a Saudi Arabian blogger was detained last week. Extremely sad.

I am not sure that this incident is any more serious than a Polish Immigrant being killed by a Taser at Vancouver Airport or indeed a terrorist suspect been mistakenly shot dead in London. There seems if anything to be less sanctioning of these action by Central Government and less cover up.

The difference is the one that got beaten to death is a blogger, probably a city person and educated one. If it were a peasant, i think no one will even care.

rodney king etc.

its everywhere.

however, i am rather pleased that when politicians get involved in some sort of scandal instead of getting a telling off and a consultancy with some large corporation they get a bullet in the head - one less politico is never a bad thing.

No there is not much different there. Corrupt officials sustaining power using whatever means they have at their disposal. But then, if we encourage them to mimic us, then what should we expect?

Re: Chinese Blogger Beaten To Death By Government Officials

I got 魏文华.com (his name, according to this post)

Ideas?

I am willing to offer it to his family and/or supporters.

BTW: .cn is free but I don't think it's a good idea...

News is on CNN now.
