member and local native speakers comments "It's a shortcut of コスメティクス, i.e., transliteration of English "cosmetics". It's only a few years ago I learned such a word existed (I know next to nothing about cosmetics). But it's apparently been a popular word for a while, and women nowadays use this as a prime way to say cosmetics. The traditional word, 化粧品 is still widely used, too. But stats of Google, etc suggest コスメ has become more popular''
