NTT DoCoMo, Inc., Japan's leading mobile phone provider, is set to tie up with Internet search monolith Google in a bid to hang on to subscribers, company officials said.

NTT DoCoMo will be Japan's second mobile phone service provider to tie up with Google following KDDI. Rival Softbank Mobile is in a tie-up with Yahoo! Japan.

Under the plan, Google's search engine will be incorporated into NTT DoCoMo's "i-mode" Internet system in spring next year. Moreover, the company will be developing new phones based on the open source Android operating system, by the Open Handset Alliance (of which Google and NTT DoCoMo are both members).
