IE8 with domain auto-complete feature?

Rumour has it that IE8 will have the domain auto-complete feature (ie auto add .com automatically like what you can get from Safari and Opera). Can someone please confirm if they know if this is really happening? If it is, then aliasing or not becomes much more irrelavent.

Re: IE8 with domain auto-complete feature?

Verizon has hijacked this feature that I had with Firefox. I think it is unfair. It was mentioned before someplace, but it used to be that I could type in กระเด้า and both http://www. and the .com would resolve. I wonder what we can do about Verizon's behaviour. So for me the release of IE8 will not help if Verizon continues to hijack the browser. Can something be done about it to stop them. Or will other internet service providers jump on the bandwagon. I hope not.

Unfair it might be, but Verizon has little direct impact on IDN users as it is US based.

I think Verizon is likely to face problems in the near future. It is only connected to the Internet at all because ICANN permits it an IP address. Its contractual relationship with ICANN is therefore likely to prove a bit one sided.

Re: IE8 with domain auto-complete feature?

Good Points. It won't affect most of the IDN world. But I think this practice should be nipped in the bud. Happy to hear about the auto-complete.

But is the .com auto complete feature comfirmed to be released with IE8? This is really big news for the IDN world, if it is.

I really don't think MS have even decided that issue yet! As far as I am aware they have just about got the rendering engine sorted.

Well, the corporates hate it when joe blow domainer registers a typo, but when Verizon takes over typo traffic and monetises it, they all stay strangely silent.

On a personal level, if you stop using Verizon for your DNS service, (if you have a fixed IP # on your broadband, and have a dedicated server somewhere, you can set it up to provide DNS for your IP #) the problem will go away.

Yes, sure. I have ran my own DNS cache and server for many years. Strangely, most of those "internet" outages disappeared. Most of them were, in fact, DNS outages at the ISP side. It also made the loading of web pages much, much, much faster.

The fact is that you don't even need a fixed IP to run your own DNS cache, you can run it on your workstation and configure your workstation to use 127.0.0.1 as the IP address for your DNS lookups.

Windows comes with a DNS server these days? Wonders will never cease!

So still no confirmation about IE8 with the .com auto complete feature? Seems like MS IE is always behind Apple's Safari and copies quite a bit of features from the latter.

I don't understand what economic benefit MS would get from users being routed to someone's .com instead of to Live Search. I seriously doubt this is true.

Well, no. But this is a good chance for people to switch to Linux :-)

Then, you install Djbdns:

http://cr.yp.to/djbdns/install.html

Then, you configure it as a cache for your workstation:

http://cr.yp.to/djbdns/run-cache.html

Simple as pie :-)

Well it depends whether they want 50% of something or 100% or nothing. MS in my experience will take the short-term view.

Think about it, the economic value of auto-direction to MS Live Search far outweighs the cost in terms of consumer loyalty or loss of share. You are talking about the great unwashed masses, the same people who re-elected G.W.B. to the presidency after he had already f*cked up the country during his first four years. Your average Joe doesn't know or care enough to switch browsers just because of such a minor feature.

Re: IE8 with domain auto-complete feature?

Absolutely right but MS has a long way to go to catch Google on either Advertising or Search. Upsetting the Domaining community by stealing a small percentage of their traffic might also have its downside.

Point taken although, they have already stolen it with IE6 and IE7 so any harm done is already done.
