It has been a slow week. There are only a few decent drops every day. Not great drops, but decent.

I did pick up 無料壁紙.com (Free Wallpaper) in Japanese a few days ago. JP Ovt 113K. The great drops seem to come in waves. Don't know when the next wave will hit.

Today has been an especially bad day. I selected only 1 name, and even that i'm not sure if i've wasted my money.

Much better names with traffic can be registered wide open. This week, i've registered 3 open names that is giving me about 30 cents a day in PPC, and the time i spent finding them is about the same as translating and decoding 3 day's worth of drops.

It's just you.

Lots of names dropping. Mainly crap korean names caused by someone searching google without putting quotation marks on the term, I suspect.

all the owners are holding onto the good IDN names instead of letting them expire because of all the news recently of IE 7 supporting idn.

The names dropping these days expired around early January, IDNs wasn't that hot then, so we still have another few more weeks to go before they would start to dry up.

I would really admire guys that were able to work on drops during the early 2005, the drops then are many times better than what we see now - that's how people built up their portfolios.

Right, however the ppl that picked the drops early on most likely follow IDN news. Likely as the months went by people had a feeling that IDNs were going to become popular so they started holding onto them.

Definitely, i suspect that 80% of IDNs are in the hands of speculators. Naturally they would renew if they knew their dropping names are worth more than the registration fee.

Re: Is it just me or are there NO IDN drops in the last couple of days ?

A trend I have noticed of late is that most (90-99%) IDN drops are being taken, in all languages, regardless of meaning or ovt or search results.
This wasnt the case a month ago.
I think I heard someone say that its possible to register a whole bunch of names, pick through them and 'drop' the rest, as in you pay the initial reg fee but theres a weeks grace.
(This would be a registry company, and I think the grace period is for the company to check for stolen credit cards, fraud etc, and if fraud is detected then the company 'de-registers' the names and ICANN or Nominet dont take their fee)

Can someone confirm this?

(I have had experience of this with a UK reg company, I reged 100+ names in one shot via credit card and 2 days later they 'de-registered' them and refunded the money back to my card, until I kicked up a stink and they then re-registered them.....)

Olney has a little shameless behaviour in the past

I'll confirm that most of my best domains can be found if you search for the punycode almost all of them will show up on deleted list.

what do you mean ? Why would your domains be on the deleted list?

Re: Is it just me or are there NO IDN drops in the last couple of days ?

For com/net, Verisign allows registrars to delete a name and get a full refund up to 7 days out from the initial registration date.

This is how/why Pool and eNom randomly register thousands of dropping names each day, add them to their auctions, and delete them within 7 days if they don't sell at auction - money for nothing, basically.

openSRS allows for the deletion of a name within the first 7 days but they charge a $1 admin fee for doing so (you get a credit of the registration charge less $1). This is an attempt to discourage the "register everything and put it up on a PPC page and delete it if it doesn't show income" crowd who've been around for, oh, about 6 years or so.

Re: Is it just me or are there NO IDN drops in the last couple of days ?

Thats what I thought, will be interesting to see if any of the drops that have been picked up are re-dropped in a week or so's time...
Also, as people are waking up to IDN's it wouldnt be that much of an outlay to pick up all IDN drops, cherrypick and dump the rest.
The one or two keepers will make the $1 per rubbish name pain go away rather quickly!
