Nice, but this is sending me a clear message that they favour IDN.com over IDN.cn

Re: Chinese enterprises favor IDN domain names

From what i've seen on billboards they seem to go for whatever extension is free, not being too fussed (but .com is the most popularly seen. Then .net, then .cn. - probably due to the price difference) .

Still many many companies using some god awful domains though. Seen some websites advertised using what looks like 8-9 random letters (actual the first letter of each pinyin character in a name) some using 10-12 digit telephone numbers as websites. On the up side it seems that IDNs are definetely hitting the mainstream in advertisements, and hopefully spell the end to the trend of using these random looking ASCII domains currently being used.

Re: Chinese enterprises favor IDN domain names

The dot com is a highly established brand. Many people still don't know about the .cn extension, even though you read that there are so many new regs of .cn everyday.

Many Chinese read my signature, and most follow my advice --- IDN.com will be king!

Well, perhaps we should wait for ChinaStar to put the dot CN case before passing judgement.

Of course, those involved in the Chinese idn.com hype-machine have been promoting their wares for some time now, but why on earth would the Chinese need advising about what TLD they should favour the most??!

Why not let them decide who is 'king'... or is that not a good idea, given that Chinese idn.com holders potentially have a lot to lose?

The Chinese decided which tld is the king by themsleves. CNNIC has been advising the general public that .cn is the way to go, but individuals and enterprises there still choose to use the .com.

I would like to hear opinion from all the Chinese domainers on .com vs .cn.

Based on ChinaStar's self introduction, he is not a Chinese domainer. He was born and raised in UK. Not sure if he has been to China.

I'm afraid what you will hear will depend very much on what they intend to sell.

Getting feedback from domainers alone will not work.

It is not the Chinese public that will decide. It is the high profile Chinese Language sites that will decide. These have predominant used dot Com to date. They could of course always switch allegences, but I personally would not bet on it.

I think .cn is a more risky investment. Even .cn turns out to be better than .com, in China, someone can find a way to steal a good .cn from you. Chinese government is less predictable.

Actually, I do not see any reason that .cn will be much better than .com in the future. A lot of people are using idn.com now. When it become a fact the government can do nothing about it. The only thing they can do is to promote .cn. They cannot ban .com for sure. People will do their own judgment and choose.

In my opinion, both .cn and .com will be good. But for domainers with no much power in China, especially those abroad, .com is better.
