French idn's on the rise? :)

French President Jacques Chirac stormed out of a European summit meeting today to protest a speech in English by a top French business executive.

“I’m going to speak in English, the language of business,” said Ernest-Antoine Seilliere, the former head of France’s powerful union of employers, who now runs European employers federation Unice.

Hearing those words, Chirac, French Finance Minister Thierry Breton and Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy promptly quit the ballroom where European leaders were meeting.

Chirac returned after Seilliere’s speech, and aides said the French leader had walked out to defend the French language.

Typically officials at EU gatherings speak in their native tongue, and their remarks are translated.

French was long the dominant language of the European Union but has been overtaken by English during the last decade.

Re: French idn's on the rise? :)

I'm affraid IDN will work only for latin linguages, particularly french.

French is used by more than 300 million 'francophones' including Canada, Sénégal, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Polynesia,, Togo, Benin, Guinea, Ivoiry Coast, Congo, Madagsacar, Centrafrique, Lebanon, Belgium, Switzerland etc......

marche means walk, but marché means market, so you need IDN.

Therefore we are now developping one of the largest french IDN portfolio

French is definitely on the rise, but so are other European languages. There are still opportunities in these markets.

However, to say that IDN "only" works for latin is to worship imperialism. One shouldn't forget one's roots, even when in pursuit of business profits.

And besides, there are other languages like Korean, where type-in can be significant, even without the benefit of having a strong english equivalent.

Re: French idn's on the rise? :)

Sorry, this is reality.

Only logical contellations will work in the future:

Latin.latin and IDN.IDN , and if it work with idn.latin, I would be the first to support it, as far as my arabic portfolio is concerned. Overture is useless if you work on idn.latin constellation.

I keep about 800 french IDNs but only 20 arabic IDNs, it is a question of strategy and experience, just because the 'hybride' solution is a no-go.

May be I'm wrong, but French and Arabic are my mother linguages....
