Re: So, how much longer do we need to wait?

cant help but agree with rd here.

i was SO surprised at the old school way of doing business and way of thinking here.

Really the consumer is totally f**ked in Japan because each industry follows its own rules and locks the consumer in. there is NO innovation that I can see to break ranks and develop a truly consumer oriented service.

a prime example:

my mate wanted to sell his car to a dealer. he got about 4 dealers round to see his car but they wouldn't give him a price unless he promised to sell it to them. only after he agreed to sell would he get a price off them. WTF!

and none of the dealers would do business any other way. in the end he said f**k it and kept the car.

I've had the experience a couple of times where my business has been turned away because I couldn't pay in cash, even though they accepted credit cards and i have a Japanese credit card to pay with. HOW F**KING STUPID IS THAT?

Another amazing thing is the lack of investment in technology and systems. You won't believe the amount of paperwork every little thing takes here, and the antiquated systems used to keep it rolling.

In short, the only thing keeping the Japanese economy going is all the millions of hours of unpaid overtime. And when all the salarymen are totally exhausted and can't work any more, then the whole thing will collapse spectacularly.

edit: excuse my french

Re: So, how much longer do we need to wait?

You have to wait many months for there to be a significant difference in browser penetration. The AU rollout is probably extending to less than a half a million to one million PCs a day in Japan if it is anything like the US rollout.

On an interesting note, I see evidence that type-in to my japanese websites has gone up from 2% to 5% of all traffic over the last 2 weeks. This is just eyeballing 10 or so sites using google analytics. As others have said, dentsu and corporate advertisers have to kick in eventually to compell people to start typing in, but even a modest jump in type-in is pretty encouraging to me this early in the game. I expect a much more positive situation by holiday 08.

I been to Japan only once, Tokyo and Sapporo. I think Japan is quite unique among Asian countries in having a big service industry. Work is created in areas where customers are expected to "D-I-Y" in other East Asian countries.

You won't find this in cut throat capitalist economies like Singapore, Hong Kong, and to lesser extent even some places in China (private organizations). Redundant positions are removed after sometime.

Re: So, how much longer do we need to wait?

While I started out with Japanese I soon realised that I had to 'spread the risk' ... so to speak ... and started picking up domains in other languages ... though I am an English speaker and made many mistakes I think it was a smart move (Lots of research .. finding good dictionaries, both paper and online etc etc etc)

Russian is by far the best performer for me, Japanese second (both 'generic' and real estate terms)

Re: So, how much longer do we need to wait?

The logistics of upgrading millions of systems is mind blowing. As Rhys said, less than a million machines are sent the Auto Upgrade on any particular day. This alone dictates that it will take some time.

On top of that, awareness and understanding need to change. The ease of use, SEO advantage and the memorability of IDN's are enough to pretty much guarantee that this will happen. However it will still take time. First critical mass must be achieved in browser penetration. Then the Advertising agencies will start selling their clients on the advantages of upgrading to an IDN. Then you will start to see ads with IDN's in them as commonplace. From this people start to realize that domain names work as an Index and their browsing habits start to change. This is the point that you can expect to see significant change in type-in traffic.

All this will take time. Russian is an excellent example of the progression. Their Auto-Update started more than a year ago.

Yes, an if the Japanese are bad at the Internet, what about this lot!

http://www.wspgroup.com

Yes, no joy I guess. Just as you can't get in we cannot get out. Multi-National Company 24hrs without email. They have got something snagged together now, but it is damned slow!

Thanks for your concern, rhys. But, no worries. It's not that I posted the message because I was so bothered. Of course, I'd stay on.

Here comes another comment. I am starting to be amused.

It should be nothing personal. More to do with business. There are sellers on this forum, and being a native, your words carry weight, so naturally people are unhappy.

Thank you, Clotho. Less than a million machines a day... It was stupid of me to have thought all the machines would receive upgrade notification at once...

I am seeing signs of more robust Japanese Traffic but the Rising Star at the moment appears to be Arabic!
