Let's hope he got that one wrong

In reality I think he understands and sees the need but doesn't want to publically stick his neck out since he's not
investing in IDNs himself. Besides, he is already making plenty of money in ascii, as well as running his conferences, etc.

Once you seize an opportunity, you do whatever you can to ensure that it keeps you on top for as long as possible. What will they do, though, when a lot of the foreign traffic stops arriving? I don't know if they even care right now.

Foreign traffic won't stop arriving to ascii because of idn.

IDN will take care of local markets as well as bring fresh users to the space; all the ones who couldn't navigate the ascii namespace in the past.

If idn browsers hit market saturation point of 95% or more, it can well replace asciis for languages like chinese, korean, japanese and arabic.

Webmasters may not even bother to register ascii domains for new sites.

Some existing websites using numeric or badly formed ascii transliteration addresses will be dumped when webmasters switch to idn.

Saturation may take sometime, maybe 4-5 years, but it can be quicker if microsoft makes ie7 compulsory for the next xp service pack.

No, we are talking about e.g. Russian type-in traffic to porno.com sharply dropping off because people will be typing in порно.com or "kom" instead, once they figure out that it has a website on it.

I do respect the opinions of others, but I also very strongly believe that this will happen.

Now the guy who can't spell ascii porno, couldn't go there in the first place, so there's no traffic loss to anyone. It's just new traffic to Cyrillic porno.

This will either happen or it won't, and it certainly won't happen in geological time.

Time is running out for IDN. If it is not moving forward in a serious manner in 12 months, most people are going to lose interest. Maybe they will just lose interest in the ICANN Root, but if you don't understand something has to give and give soon, then you don't understand anything.

Trush understands what I mean, otherwise he would not have flown from Delhi to Beijing to reassure the Chinese that Fast Track means exactly that.

No that has nothing to do with why he went to China. China does not need to be convinced that the US must rescind control of the Internet.

Nope, it's only been moving in the last couple of years as traffic would suggest.
