鬼佬 Foreign Devil 鬼子 Guizi 日本鬼子 Jap

Warning: Offensive terms for foreigners in Chinese. Definitions courtesy of wiki.

鬼佬.com Cantonese. Gwailo. When the term is translated into English, it is often translated as foreign devil. Due to its widespread use, the term gwai has taken on the general meaning of "foreigner" or "westerner" rather than just Caucasian. Some Caucasians living in Hong Kong now occasionally use gweilo to jokingly refer to themselves. This reflects a transformation in which an ethnic group begins referring to itself with a term which was originally considered an ethnic slur.

鬼子.com Mandarin, guizi (鬼子, pinyin: guǐzi) is a similar term to 鬼佬. Guizi, however, can be used to refer to either the Japanese (rìběn guǐzi, "Japan ghost") or Caucasians (yang guizi, "ocean ghost"). (Laowai ("old out" or "old outsider"), usually used for Caucasians, is a less pejorative term in Mandarin than guizi. )

Re: 鬼佬 Foreign Devil 鬼子 Guizi 日本鬼子 Jap

鬼佬 is not an insulting word, but 鬼子 and 日本鬼子 are.

If your friend's last name is Chan, instead of calling him Mr. Chan you can call him "佬 Chan".

鬼 is referred to somebody with hairy face, beard and mustache, with no insults.

The translation of 外国鬼 as "foreign devil" has been wrong for more than a century because of the handiness of the word "devil". The right translation should be "foreigner with hairy face".

Re: 鬼佬 Foreign Devil 鬼子 Guizi 日本鬼子 Jap

In other parts of the world, due to political presure, people are more careful to offend the "other". For example, the movie 鬼子来了 Guizi is coming - refering to the Japanese - won the Cannes Film Festival in 2000. Imagine a movie in the US comming out with the title "Japs are Comming", or "Chink Attack" or anything else like it. It just won't happend.

In English of course, the title was translated as "Devils on the Doorstep", just so noone would be offended. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/devils_on_the_doorstep/

Of course, that is the reason offensive domains are appealing, they generate controversy, and are a chance for the offended to take the name into their own control. Nigger.com is owned by the NAACP, an African-American group, for example.

I was told a long time ago that China had the "rights" to use "impolite" words towards Japan because Japan surrendered in its own aggression war against China. But I never had a chance to verify that.

Probably some sort of rules in the surrender agreement that it's ok for US and China to make movies of defeating Japan, but not the other way around. Something like that....

Re: 鬼佬 Foreign Devil 鬼子 Guizi 日本鬼子 Jap

I was told that Japanese never "invaded" or done lots of other unpleasant things in China and the rest of Asia. Eskimos did it.

Never got a chance to verify that either. Most of the eye witnesses were dead by now, so they had to recruit actors :p

鬼佬's price reduced to $75 in light of possible less offensive meaning.

Very nice!

鬼佬 by himself is a bit lonely. 鬼婆.com (female foreign devil) is available. :-)

Many domain names related to China's traditional festivals and national legacies have been lost to overseas investors. We must prevent further losses.
Prices raised to $500 each due to news.
