Dynadot Privacy who.is....NOT!

I had privacy put on one of my domains for $2 a year...what a surprise to find out they still list your name.
Its only .50 a year a domainsite and I think they "fully" give you privacy. What a waste Of $2 bucks.

Here is their "sample" from their FAQ. I think at most other registrars it is ANONYMOUS...that would be whole idea.
Anyone know for sure if this is the case. Below is Dynadots example of their privacy who.is. Not much private about it unless you lie about your name.

Re: Dynadot Privacy who.is....NOT!

I was as angry as you.

Never seen this before on any other registrar.

THAT'S *NOT* PRIVACY. It's a hoax misleading $2 rip.

Send them a couple of messages. Useless.

They wrote me back something to the effect that if they use their name then they have "legal" responsibility for the name. $2 ripoff.

Re: Dynadot Privacy who.is....NOT!

I was surprised when I found that out, too. $2 for a private whois is expensive and it ain't even private at all.

Dynadot is not good for adult names, it seems.

Same was for me - surprising

Here is their responce:

Quote:
Hello,

For our domain privacy, we do not replace the name field for the whois contact record. We still show your name because if we use our name instead, technically, we would be the legal owner of the domain and we are not. It would be illegal for us to do that. There are proxy services that do that, but we feel that our privacy service offers better protection than proxy services. You can read more about this in an article one of our staff writers wrote:

Problems with Proxy Registration and Related Services

Re: Dynadot Privacy who.is....NOT!

Their whois privacy is not privacy.

However, if you do have whois privacy, then it's easier to have the domain taken away from you (IMO).

My thoughts on this are that if you are going to reg a domain, then you should have the balls to let the world know who owns it. You don't want people to know that you own FatDirtyWhores.com? Then don't reg it. Personally, I wouldn't care who knew - I would tell them to either stay out of my business or start feeding and clothing me.

BTW, if I see FatDirtyWhores.com suddenly registered, then I will know that it is one of you dirty bastards!

There's more about this world we live in than dirty porn fantasies.

I had to protect some of my Arabic domains for reasons I prefer not to address here.

Re: Dynadot Privacy who.is....NOT!

Sorry Ross - I couldn't resist.

Anyway, back on the subject.

Last night I registered a few domain names with name.com
Price was just $5.99 for new registrations, and that included Free Whois Privacy.

Thought it was a pretty good deal - compared to the cost of regging names at Dynadot or Domainsite ( both of which I use on a regular basis )

Q: What is the easiest way to drop names on accident?

A: Have your names spread out across 10 different registrars.

On a side note, Dynadot has made it a bit harder to steal names now. Now, you need to enter your date of birth in order to unlock a domain. DOB may not be the best way, as many people have their birthday information on forums, etc, but at least it's a step in the right direction.

Re: Dynadot Privacy who.is....NOT!

this is a controversial dynadot policy, but they do have a good point, full privacy means the registrar is for all purposes the owner of the domain and that can be good but it can also be bad depending on the circumstances, they explicit tell in their privacy section that they will not replace the name of the registrant in the who is, only adress, email and phone number, so their policy is pretty clear, everyone that requests full privacy must use other registrar.

Re: Dynadot Privacy who.is....NOT!

I deleted all my privacy options some months ago. What happens if the registrar goes bust? Don't expect much sympathy from Verisign or ICANN in such a situation. Privacy is too much of a risk by my reckoning.
