DNJ: Did he really say that?

When commenting about the possible
introduction of new TLDs and IDNs that would allow local
languages to be used on both sides of the dot,
reporter Scott
Shuey quoted Twomey as saying that while
many would welcome the ability to have
domain names in their native languages, there are a
number of downsides, including cyber-squatting,
typo-squatting and domaining.

Dominaing, which is technically legal, is still somewhat controversial. Domainers purchase non-trademarked domain names in the hopes of either reselling the name at a profit. Some websites have resold for millions of dollars. Other domainers "park" the domain in order to generate advertising revenue. A parked site usually reroutes users to a website that contains ads.

While a number of international laws and internal procedures discourage squatting, domaining is going to be an issue, Twomey said.

My opinion:

Registries crap their pants every time a domain sells for a million bucks - they see it as lost revenue.

Well you wanted publicity.

You got it!

This is brilliant. This saga seems set to rage for a bit.

What he really wanted to achieve, was to try to brush IDN.com under the carpet.

After this it will be on fire! What a moron.

Yep, my thoughts exactly. They will try to reserve and auction prime keywords in their new made-up extensions, and they may sell a few million domains. But answer me this: Who has ever seen a live dot EU website come up in a SERP? Or a dot MOBI, for that matter?

That those f*ckers probably won't alias my arabic names, I've heavily hedged my portfolio with latin names to pay the bills and I will keep those arabic names forever!

Its just more BS to ensure that the registers get a chance at a slice of the pie if you ask me.

If Twomey really said that, my first though was, "what a fuc*ing idiot." (You may replace asterisk with "k")
"Domaining" has made MANY NON-DOMAINERS very rich, and extremely thankful for people who do speculate in domains.
