In Russian, according to lingvo.yandex.ru online dictionary, it means

1) reader, reviewer
2) adviser, consultant

This word is popular among lawyers in Germany, Poland in other European countries, along with Russia. One the of the largest newspapers in Estonia is called REFERENT if I'm not mistaken.

You learn something every day. And here I thought I could speak German! But I'm a native English speaker with an above average vocabulary and I didn't know the practical meaning of this word in English, so I surely can't be expected to know it in German :-) In English, it sounds very abstract (the thing which is being referred to) - actually sounds like an Object Oriented programming language term or something, so I assumed it to probably have a more practical meaning that I didn't know about...

Anyhow, good luck with your sale! I think the real value will lie with the German translation.
