Now worth it for companies to dig in the oil sands and oil shale.
Canada is currently the US largest oil supplier from their oil sand deposits.
Saudi Arabia is #2.

They figure they can get 173 billion barrels of oil out with todays technology.

The bad news is the amount of environmental damage from the huge amount of slush that is left over once the oil is extracted.

Since when would that worry the Republican's especially when it is somebody else's back yard that is being poisoned?

And for all the retorhic, I doubt if the Demoncrats are going to rank the Canadian Environment as a priority in the current economic climate.

But knowing the Arabs they will know when the take pressure of the markets to avoid massive new competition becoming viable. Probably just let them spend a couple of years and billions of dollars before pulling the rug!

Re: Oil prices going up like nobody's business.

If I remember what I heard on the news yesterday, gasoline consumption in the USA has dropped for the first time in decades.

I was watching a guy from S&P on BloombergTV calling the bottom of the recession NOW, because the consumers would soon be getting hold of their tax rebate checks and he reckoned anyone who thought they'd save the money or use it for debt reduction didn't know American consumers. The reduction in gasoline consumption says otherwise.

The recession will start in earnest when the big companies start laying people off. They have hardly got a toe in the water yet, but the politicians were calling the Bottom even before it started. Remember, there was never suppose to be one!
