Shopping.com in Chinese
I'm the owner of shopping.com "血拼.com" in Chinese. There's a catch, however, it's NOT the most common used term for shopping in Chinese, which is "购物“. Google trends tells the story.
http://news.google.com/trends?q=%E8%...B4%AD%E7%89%A9 Now is 血拼.com (shue ping) worthless? This is a new Chinese word, transliterated from English "shopping", using the words "blood fight", colorfully suggest another Chinese phrase "大出血“, meaning blood-let, or paying a lot of money. It's colorful, it's slangish, it is about a million times better sounding/stylish than its dominant/drab bro "购物" (which itself grew from nothing in usage to dominance in the last 20 years), and any other equivalent that I (and my wife) can think of. So the million dollar question is: does this word have staying power? two years ago when I first registered it, google counts were at 200k. Today there are 7M search results. Again see google trends for its growth. http://news.google.com/trends?q=%E8%...ate=all&sort=1 It has grown, but will it grow to take over the market for "shopping"? Any native Chinese/Taiwanese (I believe Taiwanese coined the word?) give me some input? Thanks and Regards Kenne

Re: Shopping.com in Chinese
I doubt it will ever overtake 购物 in usage, as it is really only a taiwanese term.
Also they do not have exactly the same meaning. 血拼 i would more translate as 'shopping spree' - 'mad shopping trip'.. Nice domain though, very fitting for easy development. |

Re: Shopping.com in Chinese
Interesting. Maybe that's it. I've not lived in China for many years, so have no idea whether they are using it as "shopping" or "shopping spree". I'm checking out its first 5 pages of google results and found it used mainly as "shopping or shopping spree both ok", "shopping spree", "shopping", and cases of "bloody battles in commerce and military".
mGrohan you are from taiwan right? Nice to have people actually living in China/Taiwan commenting on this, which is what makes this site so great. Another thing: are there other competitive alternatives to "购物“? "购物“ just sound terrible/staid at least in Mandarin. again, I've not lived in China for many years and would like input. Thanks! I'm thinking of liquidating my portfolio, yet here I am, picking up shopping.net; I'm reliving my days of IDN addiction

Re: Shopping.com in Chinese
So what do you say when you are going shopping? Maybe in Cantonese "购物“ sounds better. In my childhood, we'd have said "去买东西“. Maybe they still say this? "东西" seems to get some search traffic:
http://news.google.com/trends?q=%E4%...B4%AD%E7%89%A9 I'm also checking the google trends for china area: Looks like this year there's a sharp uptick in "血拼"s popularity. So may be a fluke. I'll watch it more. Also, shopping as a leisure time activity is very very new in China. Used to be necessity/grocery oriented. I think "购物" and "买东西" tends to be used for necessities. Any other alternatives?

Re: Shopping.com in Chinese
It must be a new term for shopping or used by mainly Taiwanese. It is actually the first time I heard that it means shopping.
I have not lived in China for 10 years. Maybe things changed. ![]() I think 购物 is pretty standard way to say shopping and a premium name for sure. |

Re: Shopping.com in Chinese
血拼 or 瞎拼 is transliteration of "shopping" in Chinese, with the latter being newer version and both being primarily used in Taiwan and HK. These are considered as the fancy way of saying 购物, thus only used by young generation in (Mainland) China.

Re: Shopping.com in Chinese
Thanks markits.
I just bought 瞎拼.com/cn; I've the feeling no body wants them right now. 瞎拼seems where “血拼” was 2 years ago, cute slangs but not yet mainstream acceptance. But both are there because of a lack of corresponding nice word in Chinese for "shopping". Anyway. My liquidation plan is off. #1: No reasonable offer for the WHOLE portfolio. #2 I'm actually buying again ![]() Again markits, I may put 瞎拼.com/cn for sale sometime, I'll split profit with u (if any). Any other alternatives for "shopping"?
