There certainly has been plenty of opportunity for many people, even late in the game.
I believe I was not paying attention in 2004 to 2006, when massive drops were happening and people on this forum, before I got here, were picking them up by the dozens. I picked up a few hundred product and industry type domains like FORKLIFT (フォークリフト.com), which I registered in January 2006.
Doing a Google search for "フォークリフト," I find sites like: http://www.nissan.co.jp/FORKLIFT/. And you've got to consider, how much the domain is worth to a company like that. Just ONE SINGLE SALE of such a high-priced product, resulting from a type-in, could be worth several to tens of thousands of dollars, and in the long run could easily be worth millions. Of course, that's if and when generics become popular with significant traffic.

Re: Why don't you report?!
Definitely the opportunity is still present but you gotta spend some dough to get what you really want. And what i really want are those category killers. I think i hold great names but there really is no incentive based on the account that there isn't a wide range of idn sales in arabic from 0 to millions.
This will probably increase the value of jap names just because of this post, sorry thread.
Im awaiting to see what happens with arabic names. Maybe this has happened already many times over in other languages considering this is a 10 month old deal.
One question, what do the buyers think of idn.idn do they know what the future holds or are they betting big and taking a risk?

Thanks GM.
To answer a few questions... the purchase was for 60% of the domain. So $150,000 / 60% = $250,000
...so yes, we got a steal IMHO.
You should also know that in the world of mergers & acquisition and venture funding that often the VC gets half the company just for their role in financing the project. We consider the real cost of this acquisition to be the $150k plus the development costs. The 'value' on our books is closer to $600k even though we have not spent anywhere near that much yet.
If I could offer one piece of advice to the many of you holding IDNs... if you want to do one thing to help yourself AND the community as a whole: Develop your site. Do something/anything to propagate the name and 'brand'. Think of it as waterfront property 1000s of miles from civilization. Organic growth will eventually pull people in, but if you create the destination...
Just my 2 cents. GL to all.
Brian

Much of the development is ongoing and behind the scenes. Understand that this must tie in with several other businesses that are 'blended' together to form our racing and gaming division.
I have been PM'd by a few folks requesting info and I am happy to respond with the understanding that I work for a public company and the non-disclosure agreements I have signed would make New York lawyer nervous.
In short, I'll tell you what I can - probably in vague generalities - as you might understand, there are insider trading rules best not circumvented that only Martha Stewart can fully appreciate. ;-)

Re: Why don't you report?!
Look Ron is a nice guy, but you have to get it out of your head that American ASCII domainers are going to provide an integrated infrastructure for global markets. They aren't. They don't have the commitment or the vision. But ultimately, does it really matter? What proportion of Chinese Domainer's actually go to DNJournal? When the market turns Chinese, how many will go there then. It is a bit like not being accepted by the Steam Aeroplane fraternity.

Yes, but I managed to get to Bill before he got buried in ASCII.
Just came across this. I am not recommending the US Stock Market, but there are a few pearls of wisdom in Buffets sentiments here.
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/...s/6065318.html
Warren Buffett said he's buying U.S. stocks and, if prices stay attractive, his personal investments, as distinct from his stake in Berkshire Hathaway, will soon be wholly in American equities.
Writing in the New York Times, he said he's following this principle: Be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful.
While short-term stock movements can't be foretold, the likelihood is that the market will recover before the economy or general investor sentiment rebound, and "if you wait for the robins, spring will be over," Buffett said.

I am trying to figure out who is greedy and who is fearful right now. ASCIIers or Idners?

Most of us lived and worked overseas for US corporations where we did not read or speak the languages in the countries we were working in. That is partly why IDNs were a bit of a no brainer...having been square on the other side of the language barrier. I spent most of my time in Greece, where even the alphabet was different and made it even more challenging. Once I got into reading the technical stuff (including RD at full steam arguing with the pundits at DNF) one only had to grasp that the technical side of IDN was indeed going to happen.
I never doubted that IDNs would be the first choice for internet addy's for the majority of people do not speak or read English....the question was how long until it actually was all going to happen and of course listening to the arguements of MANY people that continued to believe and tell others to hold out for "real" idns (idn.idn). They genuinely felt (and probably still feel) that idn.idn will in some way basically replace idn.com and hense .com etc would lose any value.

This is infinitely impossible for languages where there is no equivalent of C, O, and M or COM.
There's no C, O, M or COM sounding word in Chinese, whatsoever, and in Japanese, the kana COM (which is always expressed in the kana DOT COM) is not exactly a replacement.
